BAXTER, Ester W., Beeville Bee Friday, 14 Dec 1906: Death of An Original Colonist. The Matagorda County Tribune of last week contains the following notice of the death of Grandma BAXTER, mother of Tax Assessor Paul Baxter, of this county, and at one time a resident here. Mrs. Ester W. Baxter, nee YEAMANS, better known as Grandma Baxter, because of the rage and numerous offspring, died about 6 o'clock this morning at the residence of Sheriff Amos LEE, with whom she had made her home for the past two years, Mrs. Lee being a favorite granddaughter who had ministered to her most tenderly in her declining years. Mrs. Baxter was born June 23, 1813 in the state of New York and therefore she was in her 94th year. Longevity is a characteristic of the family, her brother, Horace Ycamans having died some two years ago in Matagorda at the age of 93. Mrs. Baxter came to Texas in 1828 as one of Stephen F. Austin's original colonists and has resided in this county ever since. In 1832 she was married to William Baxter and bore him twelve children, five of whom survive, as follows: David Baxter of Palacios, Paul Baxter of Beeville, Mrs. Conrad FRANZ, Mrs. Joshua FISHER of this city and Mrs. ROLAND, who lives in western Texas. Besides these children, 53 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren survive her, making her total of living descendants number 136. The body will be taken to Matagorda, which was her home for many years and will be held until Sunday morning to await the arrival of her son from Beeville, when it will be laid to rest by the side of her sleeping dust of her husband who died in October 1895, aged 87.
