CLARE, Mrs. M. E., Beeville Bee, Friday, 21 Dec 1906: After an illness of several months duration, Mrs. M. E. CLARE, relic of the late H. T. Clare, and one of the oldest citizens of this county, passed away. Her death occurred last evening at 5 o'clock. Mrs. Clare had been a citizen of Texas sixty years and a resident of Bee County for exactly half a century. She was a native of Perry County, Missouri being born on December 23, 1827 and lacking but a few days of having attained the unusual longevity of four score years. Her parents, Walter and Ellen LAYTON, moved from Missouri to Seguin, Texas in 1846 and later became residents of Lavaca County where in 1849 the subject of this sketch was united in marriage to Henry T. Clare. In 1856, she and her husband moved to what is now Bee County, settling on the Aransas creek, where they raised a large family. In 1887, they became residents of Beeville, where until his death some years ago, her husband was noted as a landmark and was connected with every progressive enterprise that tended to the upbuilding of this town. Seven children, five sons and two daughters, thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive her. Of her children, J. I. Clare is a resident in what is now the state of Oklahoma, P. S. of this city, W. A. of East Texas, H. F. of Skidmore and Mrs. M. E. WARD of Victoria and Miss Angelina and T. H. of this city.
