DAVIS, H. L., Beeville Weekly Picayune, Friday, 19 Aug 1892, page 5: SHOT IN THE DARK An Inoffensive Man Murdered by Unknown Assassins Near Cuero Cuero, Tx., Aug. 18. Last night between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock four pistol shots were heard in the western suburbs of town, but nothing was thought of it, as is a common occurrence for rowdies leaving town on a spree to use their guns in making the night hideous. This, however, was not the same sort of sport, which fact was not learned until this morning, when H. L. Davis was found by his neighbors shot to death, with a bullet wound under the right eye and another through the heart. Mr. Davis was a bachelor about 50 years of age, living by himself at the scene of the dastardly deed. No one seems to know the cause of the killing. It is quite evident that it was not for the purpose of robbery, as Davis was a poor man with no money, means or valuables, his worldly goods consisting of a couple of suburban lots with a small house. He had been pumper for the Aransas Pass road at the river here at one time, but for the past eight months or year he has been unemployed. The murdered man has no relations living here. He has a sister living in Beeville, it is learned, who has been telegraphed. The officers are using diligent measures to ferret out the crime and "bring the perpetrator to Justice", but as yet all is shrouded in darkness. Mr. Davis is a brother of Mrs. McMenemy, and was for a number of years a citizen of Beeville, and has a good reputation in this community. His remains were received here Tuesday evening and entered in the city cemetery Wednesday. The report as to his being a bachelor is a mistake, he is a widower and has one daughter living in Beeville. If caught the perpetrator of the dastardly deed should be brought before the tribunal of judge lynch and treated to a necktie party. The PICAYUNE extends its sincere sympathy to the sorrowing relatives and friends.
