MERRITT, Hugh James, Beeville Bee, Friday, 7 Aug 1903:

Hugh James MERRITT, son of Mrs. D. W. Merritt, after an illness of a month of typhoid 
fever, succumbed on last Saturday afternoon. His malady had been super-induced by 
exposure on the day of the flood at Normanna last July 2nd, being separated on that 
day from his mother. On finally reaching home he took to his bed, from which he never 
arose. 

A few days before his death he was baptized into the Catholic Church, receiving the comforts 
of that faith in his dying hours  The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, the remains 
being interred in the Catholic cemetery.
