NOTT, Dr. H. J., Beeville Weekly Picayune, Friday, 20 Nov 1896, page 5: Found Dead Dr. H. J. Nott, one of Beeville's oldest physicians, was found dead in his room adjoining his office on St. Mary's street last Friday evening, and the circumstances surrounding his sudden demise point to death from natural causes. The doctor, who was past 69 years of age, was a bachelor and had for twelve or fifteen years boarded with Major W. S. Dugat, whose residence is just across the street from the doctor's office; but for the past three years he has alternately taken meals at Major Dugat's and with Mr. B. E. Thomas, a relative (of) Major Dugat's. Deceased did not appear at either place for his meals on Friday morning or at noon, which led to an investigation, followed by the finding of all openings to his room being fastened; and after an entrance was forced the finding of his remains stretched upon the floor, his face wearing the expression of a deep sleep. He had evidently arisen from his bed in the morning to prepare for breakfast and being overcome by the stroke which caused his death, had lain down upon the floor to obtain relief. The opinion of the physicians of the town is that his death was caused by a rupture of a blood vessel in the head. His funeral occurred the following morning at 10 o'clock from the residence of Major Dugat, Rev. H. R. Laird of the Episcopal Church officiating. Dr. Nott was a native of South Carolina, and a most agreeable gentleman. While he did not seek to do an extensive practice, his opinions among the medical profession always carried weight, and he was as well an occasional contributor to the medical journals. He was one who felt a deep interest in humanity, and his demise is deeply deplored by the community. The doctor is supposed to have left some valuable papers, but so far they have not been found. He doubtless made a will, and that, with other valuables, is supposed to be hid away somewhere in a safe corner and will doubtless turn up some time. Same page (column 2): Dr. T. H. Nott and lady of Goliad attended the burial of his cousin, Dr. J. H. Nott, last Saturday. They returned home Sunday.
