WESTON, Atlee, Beeville Bee, Friday, 19 Jul 1901: Atlee WESTON, colored, was drowned in the Nueces river near Bell ranch, twenty miles above Oakville, last Friday evening while swimming a bunch of horses across the river which had been swollen by recent rains. His body was not found until the evening of the following day. Weston was a Negro of exceptional capabilities and was well like by all the whites that knew him. He was raised by "Uncle" Jim McCampbell out at Ramirena, was married and had one child. He was a Negro who never drank nor gambled and was said to be the best cowhand in that section of Texas. By saving his earnings and by shrewd trading in cattle and horses he had become quite well to do, owning at the time of his death, a league of land in Live Oak county, upon which he had just completed a nice ranch house. His death was a sudden termination to a useful life and is regretted by those who knew him.
