Seventeen Graduates in the Class of 1907

With a baccalaureate sermon at the Methodist Church on Sunday, the graduating exercises proper on Monday evening and the annual reunion and banquet of the alumni on Tuesday evening, the eleventh session of the Beeville High School has become a thing of the past and seventeen graduates enter active life or climb higher the rungs of the educational ladder, a half score of teachers and nearly five hundred children enter upon a well-earned vacation.

The graduating class of 1907, the eleventh to claim the high school as its alma mater, is composed of seventeen, thirteen of whom are of the gentler sex. As usual the honor pupil is a young lady, Miss Emma ATKINS, whose average in her studies is 97.2. The highest average, however was made by Miss Viola BLAKESTEAD, but unfortunately for her not participating in the first three examinations on which honors are based, did not share the distinction that otherwise would have been hers.

Talbot WILLIAMS saved the credit of the sterner sex by rating third with an average of 97.1. Of the graduates eleven belong to the literary course. These are; Emma ATKINS, Viola BLAKESTEAD, Edward CANNON, Edith DOWER, Fannie DOBIE, Daisy GRANT, Bertha HARWOOD, Floy LUTTS, Irma McGLOIN, Hilda MILLER and Lena THOMPSON. Six took diplomas in the business course as follows; Lonnie BORROUM, George CORBY, Ernestine HEARN, Frankie LUTTS, Della QUINN and Talbot WILLIAMS.

The Salutatory by Talbot WILLIAMS, on the "Arteries of Commerce" gave a comprehensive view of the importance of both the natural and the artificial highways of commerce and the process of the nation and it's prosperity. Miss Della QUINN enlightened her hearers by noting the remarkable process of the "Women In The Business World." The "Swing of the Pendulum" by Miss Viola BLAKESTEAD discussed this yellow peril, recalling the supremacy of the Mongolian race at one time in the world's history and noting events that suggest its regaining equal if not superior power over the Caucasian. Miss Hilda MILLER, who appeared as the class poet, humorously forecast the future of the class in verse. The title of the Valedictory delivered by Miss Emma ATKINS, was well sustained. The "Wearing of the Purple," a privilege in olden times transmitted and upheld by birth, no longer obtained it by moral and intellectual effort.
