Where We Are
Brooks County is located in the Rio Grande Plain. (If Texas was a boot, Brooks is in the toe.) The county seat is
Falfurrias in the northeastern quadrant of the county, named for founder Edward Cunningham Lasater's ranch, La Mota de
Falfurrias. The county is named for James Abijah Brooks, who helped modernize the Texas Rangers and bring them into the
20th century. Our neighboring counties, beginning in the north and continuing clockwise are
Duval and
Jim Wells with
Kleberg and
Kenedy in the east on the coast.
Hidalgo and
Starr are in the south and
Jim Hogg County shares our western line.
