Mateline Barr Lewis
  Mateline Barr Lewis, 91, Port Lavaca, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002.
  She was born Dec. 17, 1910 at Indianola, the daughter of William Duncan Barr and Emma Mendez Barr. She was married to the late Earl Lewis. A homemaker, she was a member of the Baptist Church.
  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
  Survivors include two children, Dean White of Port Lavaca and Beth Yates of Victoria; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30 at Alamo Heights Baptist Church with the Rev. Anthony "Casey" DuBose officiating. Burial followed in the Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Glenn Yates, Paul Yates, Michael Yates, Gene Davis, Matthews Pressley and David White.

Oswald Henry Kirchner
  Oswald Henry Kirchner, 82, of Seadrift, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002.
  He was born Nov. 14, 1919 in Yorktown, the son of the late Gus Kirchner and Clara Hoffman Kirchner. A welder, he was self employed.
  He is survived by his wife of the home, Virginia Dittfurth Kirchner; three daughters, Peggy Hadley of Seadrift, Nancy Taylor of Carlsbad and Debbie Ross of Victoria; three sons, Kenneth Kirchner of Seadrift, Gary Kirchner of Port Lavaca and Oswald Kirchner Jr. of San Antonio; a sister, Freda Leonhardt or Nordheim; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home with Mr. Dennis "Poodle" Wittnebert officiating. Burial followed in the Seadrift Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Donnie Kirchner, Mark Kirchner, Gary Wayne Kirchner, Morgan Ross, Roy Taylor and Michael Hadley.

Christine Y. Rodriguez
  Christine Y. Rodriguez, 61, of Port Lavaca, died on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002.
  A housewife, she was born Dec. 27, 1940 in Port Lavaca, the daughter of the late Julio Ybarra and Barbara Silva Ybarra. She was a member of the Catholic Church.
  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three sisters, Isabella Ybarra, Nancy Trevino and Josephine Morales; and six brothers, Senovio Ybarra, Julio Ybarra, Roberto Ybarra, Roosevelt Ybarra, Roger Ybarra and Ray Ybarra.
  She is survived by her husband, Eddie Rodriguez Sr. of Port Lavaca; a daughter, Marina Crabtree of Lake Jackson; three sons, Eddie Rodriguez Jr. of Port Lavaca, Gino Rodriguez of Sugarland and Guy Rodriguez of San Antonio; five sisters, Hortencia Garcia of Port Lavaca, Esperanza "Hope" Rodriguez of Houston, Connie Rodriguez of Port Lavaca, Emparo "Pye" Luna of Houston and Leonora Aleman of Victoria; a brother, Henry Ybarra Sr. of Port Lavaca; and seven grandchildren, Marquita Munoz, Blayne Rodriquez, Natasha Munoz, Gino Rodriguez Jr., Nico Rodriguez, Blain Rodriguez and Gavin Rodriguez.
  A funeral Mass was recited at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Guerra officiating. Burial followed in the Port Lavaca Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Gino Rodriguez, Eddie Rodriguez Jr., Guy Rodriguez, Gino Rodriguez II, Rick Crabtree and Jimmy Aleman. Honorary pallbearers were Roosevelt Morales, Eugene Morales, Joe Morales, Ruben Rodriguez, Emilio Luna III, Mario Luna, Rene Luna, Julio Ybarra, Henry Ybarra, Mario Ybarra and Harvey Ybarra.

Raymond Edmond Guptill Jr.
  Memorial services will be announced for Raymond Edmond Guptill Jr., 21, of Port O'Connor, who died on Oct. 2, 2002.
  He was born May 14, 1981 in Keene, N. H., the son of Raymond E. Guptill Sr. of Houma, La. and Shelly Scott of Walker, La.
  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Betty Guptill, Donna McFarland and Mary G. Rather.
  Survivors include a stepmother, Jeanna Guptill of Port O'Connor; stepfather, Edward Edeburn of Walker, La. grandparents, Delmer and Bobbie Scott of Port O'Connor; four sisters, Ginger R. Guptill of Port O'Connor, Jessica White of New Hampshire, Daniell M. Bryant of Port Lavaca and Sarenna a Guptill of Louisiana; two brothers, Josha W. Bertrand of San Antonio and Thomas J. Quibel of Louisiana and nephews and nieces.

Joseph Leal Jr.
  Joseph Leal Jr., 26, of Port Lavaca, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002.
  He was born June 24, 1976 in Port Lavaca, the son of Joseph "Joe" Leal Sr. and Connie Heysquierdo Pena of Port Lavaca. He was married to April Perez Leal of Port Lavaca. He was self employed as a floor installer and a member of the Catholic Church.
  He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Senaida "Sadie" Galindo Leal and a brother, Anthony "Tony" Galvan.
  In addition to his parents and wife, he is survived by a grandfather, Abram Leal Sr. of Port Lavaca; two daughters, Darian Perez Leal of Port Lavaca and Mariah Sadie Leal of Port Lavaca; two sons, Joseph Anthony Leal of Port Lavaca and Marcus Anthony Leal of Port Lavaca; two brothers, Jacinto Leal of Port Lavaca and Stephen Joseph Leal of Port Lavaca.
  A funeral Mass was recited at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. There was a visitation at 5 p.m. Monday at Artero Memorial Chapels of Port Lavaca. A rosary was recited at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Burial was in the Port Lavaca Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Jacinto Leal, John Leal, John David Galindo, Daniel Perez, James Perez and Eric Perez. Honorary pallbearers were D. Joe Perez, Tim Strakos, Markie Martinez, Ray Velasquez, Jerry Leal, Carver Mangum and Hilburn Heysquierdo.

Mary Roberts "Bobbie" Amsler
  Mary Roberta "Bobbie" Amsler, 82, of Port Lavaca, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002. She was born Sept. 21, 1920 in Cuero, the daughter of the late Robert Myers and Lottie Tevis Myers.
  A longtime resident of Port Lavaca, she had two successful businesses and enjoyed her membership in the Port Lavaca Fraternal Order of the Eagles. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Lavaca.
  Survivors include her husband, William Tell "Bill" Amsler of Port Lavaca; two daughters, Sherry Shaw of Hamilton and Tella Amsler of Victoria; a son, Bob Amsler of Needville; a half sister and three step sisters, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 in the Richardson Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Gresham officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Gardens.
  Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Lula May Buehring Wolff
  Lula May Wolff, 83, of Beeville, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002.
  She was born May 4, 1919 to the late Louis Henry and Clara Stroh Buehring. She was married to the late Horace M. Wolff.
  She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 38 years, receiving many awards for excellence and attendance. She retired as a plant assigner after working in the positions of operator, service assistant and local manual observer in Beeville, Cuero and Corpus Christi.
  She was a charter member of Cuero Pilot Club and Cuero Nurses Auxiliary. She was a member of Southwestern Bell Pioneers and served the San Antonio Council as secretary and treasurer.
  Survivors include sisters Elnora Erler of Beeville and Mary Ann Studemann of Oklahoma; brothers Hilbert Buehring of Karnes City, Henry Buehring of Victoria, Leo Buehring of Runge, Monroe Buehring of Lynnwood, Wash., Albert Buehring of San Antonio, Normie Buehring of Tupelo, Miss and Werner Buehring of Giddings; nephew Eddie Buehring of Port Lavaca and nieces Janice Bordonsky and Shirley Dionne, both of Port Lavaca.
  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lillie Buehring and brothers Louis Buehring Jr., Edgar Buehring, Eldor Buehring, Elmore Buehring, Harold Buehring, Hugo Buehring, Marvin Buehring and Allen Buehring.
  Visitation is at the Galloway and Sons Funeral Directors chapel until 9 p.m. Friday night. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church with the Revs. Jeff Thompson and Don Taylor officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Nancy Lee Black
  Nancy Lee Black, 86, of Tega Cay, South Carolina died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002.
  She was born in Port Lavaca on Nov. 10, 1915 to the late James Cyrus Estill and Lilah Carter Estill.
  She was employed as a manager of Texaco Petroleum Corporation and retired at the age of 70. She was a member of the 4th Church of Christian Scientists in Houston. She was a graduate of Rice University, a former resident of Houston and is a member of the Calhoun County Farm Bureau.
  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister Betty Rogers.
  Survivors include a daughter, Lilah Murrer of North Carolina, four grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
  Services were at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at the Port Lavaca Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Murray, Dick Zabensky, Cy Rogers and Jack Rogers. Memorials may be made to the 4th Church of Christian Scientists, Montrose Blvd., Houston, Tx.

Bertie Lea Roberts
  Refugio - Bertie Lea Roberts, 77, recently of Giddings but a life long resident of Refugio and Goliad Counties, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, after a long and valiant struggle with Parkinson's Disease.
  She was born in the Sarco Community, Goliad County, on Feb. 28, 1925, to the late James Washington Perkins and Mary Roselee Prescott Perkins. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, W. D. Roberts. Brothers Clarence and Billy Boy Perkins and sisters Fairnell Perkins and Margie Perkins Jones also preceded her in death.
  Bertie was an active member of the Eastern Star, a wonderful homemaker and a loving and devoted Mother and Granny. She is survived by her three sons, David Roberts and wife Wanda of Port Lavaca, James T. Roberts and wife Cindy of Giddings and Alan Roberts and wife Robyn of Giddings. She spent most of her time enjoying her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Connie Roberts Longuet and husband Devin of Houston; Melissa Roberts Machicek and husband Don of Plano; William Kolle Roberts of Inez; Leslie Roberts Jurkash and husband Tony of Waxahachie and Jennifer and Allyson Roberts of Giddings. Bertie also enjoyed her great grandchildren Lindsey and Brandon Longuet. She is also survived by her step- grandchildren Darcy Stockton of Refugio and Stacy Stockton of Goliad, along with Stacy's children Stockton, Lauren and Trinity.
  Bertie will be greatly missed and her family and friends will cherish the time spent with her.
  The family will receive visitors at Moore Funeral Home in Refugio from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002.
  Services will be at the First Baptist Church in Refugio at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002. Burial will immediately follow at the Sarco Cemetery.
  Pallbearers will be Charles Jones, Dickey Jones, Bruce Birmingham, Tommy Martin, Paul Teague and John Hardy.

Maria Anita Guillen Baez
  Maria Anita Guillen Baez, 64, of Greeley, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002 at her home.
  She was born Nov. 4, 1938 in Port Lavaca, Texas to Alex and Susie (Luna) Guillen.
  Survivors are her husband, Efrain Baez of Greeley; her mother, Susie Guillen of Port Lavaca, three sons, Joe DeLosSantos of Eaton, Isaac DeLosSantos of Greeley and Edward DeLosSantos of Beverly Hills, CA; six daughters, Mary Catherine Morales, Ruby Sabzevari, Cynthia Ferman, Susie Eubanks, and Margie Gomez, all of Greeley and Beatrice Hawkins of Lompoc, CA; four brothers, Alex Guillen II of Texas City, Sonny Guillen of LaMarque, Alfred Guillen of Texas City and Frank Guillen of Victoria; four sisters, Margaret Delgado and Susie Rodriguez both of Port Lavaca, Mary Solaya of Willis, and Janie Balderos of Houston; 14 grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.
  She is preceded in death by her father, Alex Guillen and her sister, Estella Garza.
  Private family graveside services will be held at the Eaton Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado or to the Maria Baez memorial fund in care of Moser Funeral Service, 3501 S. 11th Avenue, Evans, CO 80620.
James "Woodie" Jackson
  James "Woodie" Jackson passed this life on Nov. 8 at the age of 84.
  He was born and raised in Port Lavaca and graduated from Port Lavaca High School in 1935. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was a scholarship athlete in baseball. He was a veteran of World War II serving as a flight engineer on the B-17 and 13-24 Bombers. He flew 38 missions in the European Theater. H was a retired Rural Mail Carrier for Route 3, Port Lavaca with 40 years of Service.
  He was a member of the Port Lavaca Church of Christ for over 50 years, having taught the adult Bible Class for 38 years. He was also church treasurer for 36 years.
  He was married to the former Maurine Shannon on April 6, 1946 and is survived by her, one son, Shan and his wife Linda, and grandchildren, Brian, Casey and Bo.
  He was preceded in death by parents, Edward W. and Kittie Ruth Jackson, brothers, Roy, J.D. and Vurlin; sister, Thelma and grandson, Andy.
  Family visitation was at Richardson/Colonial Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services were conducted by Mr. Gene van Noord, at 10 a.m. Monday from the Port Lavaca Church of Christ. Singing was led by Mr. Cliff Prater. Burial was at Greenlawn Gardens in Port Lavaca.
  Pallbearers were Leo Childers, Dallis Douglas, Terry Mayberry, Mike McGuire, Tommy Pilgram, Walter Rosenbrock, Frank Scott, Tillman Shafer and Keith Schmidt. Honorary Pallbearers were A.H. Bornorden, Dutch Casel Clyde Douglas, Leon Honeycutt Dr. Tim McFarland, Clifford Prater, Jim Randle, Pete Terrell and Briggs Wilborn.

Maurice J. Lukefahr
  Maurice James Lukefahr died on October 25, 2002 in Elsa, Texas, of complications of diabetes and heart disease. A funeral Mass was held on Monday, October 28, 2002, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brownsville.
  Born December 7, 1926 in Greeley, Nebraska, Maurice moved with his family during the Dust Bowl to Bay City, Texas. After graduation in 1944 from Bay City High School, he served as a paratrooper in the 13th Airborne Division of the United States Army Occupation Forces in Japan. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville and received his Master's Degree and PhD in Entomology from Texas A&M University in College Station. Maurice served on the Off-Campus faculty of the Texas A&M Department of Entomology for many years.
  In 1953 he moved to Brownsville to join the staff of scientists at the United States Department of Agriculture's Experiment Station. Eventually becoming station leader, Maurice enjoyed a prolific research career with the USDA until his retirement in 1979.
  He then undertook research and consultation assignments with United Nations affiliated agencies in Nigeria, Brazil and Niger until returning to the United States in 1992 to assume the position of research scientist at Rio Farms, Inc., in Monte Alto, Texas. Even after his official retirement in 1995, he remained on the staff as scientist emeritus, pursuing parttime research and consultation activities until his death.
  Virtually his entire 50-year career in agricultural research was devoted to the study of host plant resistance to insect pests. Due to the quality of his investigations and the long list of publications he authored, he was recognized around the world for his pioneering work in this field. Maurice was the first investigator to demonstrate that the boll weevil could over-winter on plant species other than cotton. He received a Rockefeller Foundation grant allowing him to develop strains of cotton that were naturally resistant to most insect pests.
  In Africa he directed studies of insect resistance in cowpeas, millet, and grain sorghum, and explored potential economic applications of high-protein tropical beans. At Rio Farms he led investigations into alternative crops for South Texas farmers such as millet, grapes, and blackberries, and pioneered the region's use of tropical legumes as wild game forage.
  Maurice is survived by his wife Nancy Smith Lukefahr of Brownsville (formerly of Port Lavaca); sons James of League City and William of Houston; daughters Mary Louise of Houston, Catherine Abell of Kingwood, Margaret Coggeshall of Seabrook, and Elizabeth of Austin; eleven grandchildren; brother Harold of Midfield; and sisters Dorothy Treybig of Kerrville, Teresa Lezak of Manvel, and Charlotte Parks of Victoria. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary, and brothers Paul and Thomas.

Gregory Lee "Pops" Buske
  Gregory Lee "Pops" Buske, 54, of Port Lavaca, died on Friday, Nov. 8, 2002.
  He was born Dec. 12, 1948 in Hallettsville, the son of the late Hilmer Buske and Blanche Hubbell Buske. He was a painter.
  Survivors include Linda Kay Buske, wife of Port Lavaca; four daughters, Wendy Allison, Sharon Morales, Melissa Buske and Christina Buske, all of Port Lavaca; a sister, Cynthia Hamilton of Arkansas; two brothers, Michael Buske of Victoria and Timothy Prater of Houston; and six grandchildren.
  A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Fisherman's Chapel in Port O'Connor with Rev. Enny McDonough officiating.

Theda W. O'Neal
  Theda W. O'Neal, 86, of Houston and formerly of Port Lavaca, died on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
  She was born Jan. 1, 1916 in Victoria, the daughter of the late Berry Turner Dixon and Dottie Ester Favors Dixon. She was married to the late L. U. O'Neal. A homemaker, she was a Texas and Point Comfort member of Assembly of God Church. She was a longtime member of Port Lavaca prior to moving to Spring.
  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Muriel Byrd, Johnnie Vee Thompson, Christine Pell and Lyla Taylor; and four brothers, Don Dixon, B. Dixon Jr., Leonard S. Dixon and J. M. Dixon.
  Survivors include three daughters, Wanda F. Tumlinson of Kingsbury, Barbara A. Pogue of Spring and Mary Katherine "Kathy" Tumlinson of Houston; a son, James L. O'Neal of Port Lavaca; a brother, Floyd Ray Dixon of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
  Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15 at Richardson/Colonial Funeral Home chapel. Services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16 at the funeral home chapel with John T. Kisiah officiating. Burial will follow in the Port Lavaca Cemetery. Pallbearers are Michael L. Tumlinson, Thomas E. Pogue, Richard Alan Pogue, Stephen J. O'Neal, John F. Morrow and Herb H. Stebbing.

Mona Lynn Fields Rackley
  Graveside services for Mona Lynn Fields Rackley, 50, of Port Lavaca, were held Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 at Oaklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Mike Gibbs officiating.
  She died Nov. 11, 2002 in Port Lavaca. She was a retired banker and member of the Baptist Church.
  She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Rackley, her father, Jack Fields and grandparents.
  Survivors include her mother, Mary Fields; sister and brother in-law, Denise and Ronnie Salena of Port Lavaca; niece, Jacklynn Salena; nephew, Allen Salena; aunt, Sammie Price of Victoria; and two aunts and uncles of Athens.
  Mona will be missed by her family and many friends.
Raymond A. Rozner
  Raymond A. Rozner, 71, of Edna, died on Saturday, Nov. 16.
  He was born Oct. 30, 1931 in Ganado. He was the son of the late Anton S. Good and Angeline Biskup Good. He and his wife, Ella "Pat" Rozner of Edna married Nov. 18, 1952. He did mechanical maintenance, was a retired Alcoa employee, a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, was in the U. S. Army and a member of Steel Workers Union.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Rozner.
  Survivors include four daughters, Theresa Marek of Edna, Linda Karl of Edna, Carol Biehle of Austin and Shirley Gloor of Houston; a son, Scott Rozner of Edna; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
  Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18 at Slavik Funeral Home. There was a rosary at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19 at the funeral home followed by the service at 10 a.m. with Msgr. Michael O"Shaughnesay officiating. Burial followed at Memory Gardens of Edna.

Betty Lou Hostetler Whitman
  Betty Lou Hostetler Whitman, 70, of Port Lavaca, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002.
  She was born July 12, 1932, the daughter of the late Gilbert Hostetler and Mary Lou Benigar Hostetler. She was married to the late William Whitman.
  In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Gilbert, William and Arthur Hostetler and a sister, Alice Benshoff.
  Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Steve Kasper of Port Lavaca; a sister, Ada Sutter of Warren, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Jacquelynne Stracener of Austintown, Ohio, Nickiey Stracener and Billy Stracener of Port Lavaca.
  Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 at the Richardson/Colonial Funeral Home chapel with Chaplain Carolyn Cown officiating.

Arturo A. Silvas
  Arturo A. Silvas, 47, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19.
  A visitation was held Thursday, Nov. 21 at Brook View Funeral Home. A private family services will be held later.
  Arturo was born March 16, 1955 in Port Lavaca to the late Arturo O. Silvas and the late Santos Coronado. He was employed by Aramark on Baylor Campus. He also worked with Compassion Ministries and coached Heart of Texas Soccer and Lake Air Little League Baseball. He married Martha Silvas Sept. 30, 1977 in Stillwater, Okla. Arturo was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his mother and father and sister Rachel Llanes.
  Survivors include his wife Martha Silvas and sons Sean, Kyle and Jason; daughter Rachel Marin; three grandchildren, brother Rolando Silvas and sister Margarita Sanchez.
  Arturo will be greatly missed by all who loved him and whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, contributions to American Diabetes Association would be appreciated.

Sammy D. Sullivan
  Sammy D. Sullivan, 68, of Port Lavaca, died on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002.
  He was born May 18, 1934 in Dale, the son of Middleton Sullivan and the late Nette Virginia Patterson Sullivan. He was a truck driver employed by George H. Coyle Trucking of Brownsville. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
  In addition to his mother, Sullivan was preceded in death by a step-son, Arnoldo Maldonado and four brothers, William, Jack, Elmer and Henry Sullivan.
  He is survived by his wife, Eugenia Rodriguez Sullivan of Brownsville; a daughter, Iris Rice of Brownsville; two sons, Alden Smedgard and Alfredo Maldonado; a brother, John L. Sullivan of Port Lavaca; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

W. F. "Red" Tanner
  W F "Red" Tanner, 92, of Port Lavaca, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002.
  He was born November 23, l910 in Port Lavaca to the late David Ellis Tanner and the late Lucinda Alice Cole Tanner. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
  W. F. Graduated from Port Lavaca High School and attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College. His initial employment was with the F. V. Gentry Fish and Oyster Corporation. He later was employed by the Wood-Moore Corporation, a local refinery. In 1943 he went to work for then Sheriff Leonard Fisher as chief deputy in the combined Sheriff"s/Tax Assessor-Collector"s office. In 1948 he joined W. H. Bauer at Bauer Dredging Company, Inc. ,He was vice-president and secretary of Bauer Dredging.
  W. F. retired in 1968. In 1970 he joined First National Bank.
  He served as senior vice-president and trust officer until he retired in 1985. W. F. had a long history of Community involvement. He was a past president of the Calhoun Independent School District board, the Port Lavaca Rotary Club and Hatch Bend Country Club. He had served as a board member of the Champ Traylor Memorial Hospital, Region III Texas Education Agency and the Port Lavaca-Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce. He was a Master Mason and a 60 plus member of Lavaca Lodge #36. He served as a Rainbow Girls sponsor and received the Grand Cross of Color Award. He was a member of the Port Lavaca Rotary Club for over 50 years. In 1984 he was named Paul Harris Fellow, Rotary"s highest honor.
  Tanner is preceded in death by his wife, Phil Mavis Bucek Tanner, sisters, and brothers.
  He is survived by daughters Sandra Barton of Port Lavaca and Phyllis Elliott of Nashville, Tennessee; three grandchildren; Robin Barton Sikes and Cindy Barton Elledge of Port Lavaca, and Mark Stuart Elliott of Nashville, Tennessee; three great-grandchildren; Alexander Lisa Weed, Riley Barton Sikes, and Macy Elaine Elledge; two nieces, Jewel Fisher of Port Lavaca and Tommie Mae Hicks of Houston.
  Visitation was held from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at the funeral home chapel.
  Graveside services were at Six Mile Cemetery, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002; the Rev. O'Quin Kelly officiating.
  Graveside services will be conducted by the Masonic Lodge No. 36 AF & AM.

  Wilbur N. "Deck" Dechert, 85, of Port Lavaca, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002.
  He was born Aug. 29, 1917 in Art-Mason County, the son of the late E. W. Dechert and Minnie Willmann Dechert. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Noonday Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4403, was a World War II Army veteran and a graduate of Trinity University.
  Survivors include his wife, Catherine Ryan Dechert; and a daughter, Clydene Dechert.
  Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 at the Richardson Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bernie Sandberg officiating. Burial will follow in the Port Lavaca Cemetery.

Barbara Carol Bolling
  Barbara Carol Bolling, 67, of Palacios died at her residence Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002.
  She was born July 30, 1935 in Fort Sill, OK to the late Joe and Rhuie Lucille Hopkins Tafolla.
  Mrs. Bolling was a resident of Palacios since 1948 and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She graduated from the University of Houston, Victoria and was a Certified Public Accountant. She retired from the Port Authority of Point Comfort, and was an accountant with Lacey Lowry Bookkeeping Service as well as operating her own accounting business.
  Mrs. Bolling was an honorary and past president of The Harmony Club, member of and past president of the Alapha Club, member of the Palacios Library Board of Directors, member of and past president of the Friends of the Palacios library, treasurer of the Robert Duran Caring & Sharing Food Pantry Board, treasurer of The Palacios Beautification Committee, member of the Monday Night Bridge Club and was the newly elected Director of the Palacios Chamber Commerce.
  Survivors include: 2 daughters and a son-in-law: Lucile Kay Wyatt of Dallas and Susan Carol and John Kopacz of LaWard; sister: Frances Ballard of Lawton, Ok.; brother: Bill Tafolla of Portage, Mi.; and a granddaughter: Kimberly Susan Wyatt of Dallas.
  The funeral service was 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church of Palacios with Rev"s Janell Blair, Andy Blair and Charlie Parker officiating. Interment followed at Palacios Cemetery. Pallbearers were J. W. "Billy" Jenkins, Jr., Alan Huddleston, Lacey Lowry, Bill Stransky, Chipper Holt and Richard Meyer. Tammy Lynn Shannon Prejean
  On Monday, Nov. 25, 2002 God took Tammy Lynn Shannon Prejean to help make heaven a more beautiful. friendly and happy place.
  She will be there to greet us with a good word for all when we arrive.
  Her mother, Frankie Denham Comiskey, her father Gene Shannon, her sister Vanessa Richardson, her grandmother Mary Denham and her step-father Ben Comiskey Jr. thank-you for celebrating her short but wonderfully meaningful life.
  Tammy Lynn Prejean, 37, of Port Lavaca, was born Dec. 26, 1964 in Ganado, the daughter of Richard "Gene" Shannon of Victoria and Frankie Denham Comiskey of Port Lavaca. She was a communication specialist employed by Compaq.
  In addition to her parents she is survived by a sister, Vanessa Kay Richardson, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
  A funeral Mass was recited at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Burial followed in Port Lavaca Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Dr. Cary Bielamowicz and son Michael Bielamowicz, Ernie Richardson, Steve Marvin, Steve Marwitz, Todd Denham and Byron Cumberland.
  Honorary pallbearers were employees of EMS and MMC Home HealthCare, MMC nurses and doctors and the Relay for Life Committee.

Robert Allen Morgenroth
  Robert Allen Morgenroth, 57, of Port Lavaca, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2002.
  He was born Aug. 24, 1945 in Seadrift, the son of the late Frank Morgenroth Sr. and Lucille Bierman Morgenroth. He retired from Union Carbide with 25 years tenure. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church. He served in the U. S. Army for three years in the C Battery 6th Battalion 20th Auxiliary at Fort Carson, Col. He was a rancher in Calhoun and Victoria Counties and a member of the Calhoun County Cattlemen"s Association. He was active in the Calhoun County Youth Rodeo Association.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dallen Clay Morgenroth; a sister, Frances Ortiz; and a brother, Frank Morgenroth Jr.
  He is survived by his wife, Dana Shamek Morgenroth of Port Lavaca; a daughter, Shavauna Morgenroth of New Waverly; three sisters, Nigon Dierlam and Ida Ann Phillips of Seadrift and Irene Smith of Victoria; and a brother, James Morgenroth of Victoria.
  The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at Richardson/Colonial Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Clifford Grosenbacher officiating. Burial will be in the Six Mile Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ty Mayer, Tommy Henderson, Troy Milnar, Rayburn Haynie, Melvin "Scooter" Henke and E. "Junior" Friedrich.

Wilson P. Foreman
  Wilson P. Foreman, 76, of Port Lavaca, passed away on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002.
  He was born Oct. 17, 1926, the son of the late Isaac Foreman and Ada Dubois Foreman. He was a pipefitter employed by Alcoa. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
  He is survived by his wife Norma Faye Nazworth Foreman of Port Lavaca; three daughters, Lisa Wolter, Lori Nolen and Melody Lytly; a son, J. Mark Foreman; a sister and 10 children.
  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Richardson/Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Harold Nazworth officiating. Burial will follow at the Port Lavaca Cemetery under the auspice of Veterans of Foreign Wars 4403. The family will receive friends for visitation from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

C. Joe "Cappy Joe" Bright
  C. Joe "Cappy Joe" Bright of Port O'Connor, passed away Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 at Citizens Medical Center in Victoria.
  Memorial services and reception were held on Monday, Dec. 30 at the Port O'Connor Community Center.
  Joe Bright was the owner of the Intercoastal Lumber and Supply in Port O'Connor and was a prominent builder in Calhoun County for more than 30 years. He was also a former president of the Port O'Connor Chamber of Commerce.
  Born and raised in Houston, Joe Bright found early fame as a star end of the Houston Lamar High School AAAA State Champs in 1953. He was a member of the Houston Post's 1953 all-district football team and the Houston Chronicle's 1953 all-city team. Following these high school exploits, Joe Bright was then recruited by the infamous Paul "Bear" Bryant to play for Texas A&M in 1954.
  An avid outdoorsman and a pioneering billfisherman, Bright was a founding member of the Gulf Coast Conservation Association and was co-founder of the POCO Bueno Billfishing Tournament held each July in Port O'Connor. He was president of the Big Gun Huntin' and Fishin' Club and was deacon of the Church of the Great Outdoors.
  Joe Bright is survived by his wife Shelby Allen Bright of Port O'Connor; his brother and sister-in-law, Ray E. and Jan Bright of San Clemente, Ca.; his brother-in-law, Vince Thompson of Waimea, FL; his sister-in-law Judy Thompson of Waimea, FL; his daughter, Brenda J. Bright and son-in-law Thomas L. Dumm and children Irene and Jimmy Bright Dumm of Amherst, MA; his son and daughter-in-law Randy O. and Kelly Bright of Richmond and Randy's son Joey Bright; his son C. J. "Jody" Bright Jr. of Kona, HI; and Jody's daughter Tawny Bright; and his son Robert E. Bright of San Diego, CA.

Lillian Mae Crowl
  Lillian Mae Crowl, 93, Port Lavaca, died on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003.
  She born Nov. 28, 1909, in Alliance, Ohio, the daughter of the late Lloyd Oyster and Gertrude Bennett Oyster. She was married to the late Lester Crowl. She was a retired cashier and waitress having worked at Moo-Moo's and White's Bar-B-Q.
  In addition to her late parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Woodward and a brother, George Oyster.
  Survivors include a daughter, Betty Crenshaw of Port Lavaca, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. William S. Hess Jr.
  William S. Hess Jr., 78, of Port Alto, died on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003.
  He was born Aug. 17, 1924 in Houston, the son of the late W. S. Hess and Ruth Estelle Williams Hess. He was married to the late Anna Margaret Hess. He was employed as a general maintenance foreman for Gulf Coast Portland Cement Co. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Robert Allen Hess.
  Survivors include a son, W. S. Hess III of Marked Tree, Ark.; a sister, Ellen Silham of Houston; two brothers, Raymond Hess of Houston and Albert Hess of New Mexico; 6 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
  Services were held Saturday, Jan. 4 in the Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phil Colquitt officiating. Burial was in the Olivia Cemetery, under the auspices of VFW Post 4403. Pallbearers were Robert M. Hess, Warren Schuhsler, David Mitchell, Adam Vickery, Ken Morris and Mark Hess.

Mary Hatch Denham
  Mary Hatch Denham, 87, of Port Lavaca, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003.
  She was born Sept. 20, 1915 in Bloomington. She was one of two children born to Edgar Alvin and Mary Ranolph Hatch. Mary graduated from high school in Port Lavaca in 1933, then worked for Fergusons and City Drug Store. In May, 1935, Mary married Roy Elton Shafer who lived less than a month after that. She continued working until her marriage to the late James "Jimmy" I. Denham. Mary served as secretary for the Chamber of Commerce from May 1953 until September 1956 when she was employed as secretary of First United Methodist Church where she remained until retirement in September 1977.
  Mary is a direct descendant of Captain Sylvanus Hatch, born in 1788, who was an adjutant under General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. Sylvanus Hatch came to Texas with the Austin Colony in 1828 on the ship "Mary" of Nova Iberia, which he built. In 1829 he brought his family and about 50 passengers to what is now known as Calhoun County, landing first at Indian Point and continuing up Matagorda and Lavaca Bays. He was one of the first two commissioners to serve Calhoun County when it was created in 1846.
  In addition to her parents and husbands, Mary was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tammy Prejean.
  Survivors include her daughter Frankie Comiskey of Port Lavaca, son David Denham of Rockport/Port Lavaca, sister Gwen H. Regan of Port Lavaca; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
  Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2003 in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Laura Adams officiating. Burial followed in the Port Lavaca Cemetery.
  Pallbearers included Ben Comiskey, Jr., Ernie Richardson, David Todd Denham, James Bruce Denham, Ed Regan, and Robert Michael Regan.

  Jose Moreno, 78, of Weedhaven, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003.
  He was born Oct. 1, 1924 in El Paso, the son of the late Florentino Moreno and Felicitas Romo-Moreno. He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Catholic Church.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Andres Moreno and Antonio Moreno.
  Survivors include his wife, Adela Rodriguez Moreno of Weedhaven; a daughter, Mary M. Garcia of Olivia; three sisters, Maria Refugia "Cuca" Medina of McAllen, Juana Maria Maruca Rodriguez and Berta Moreno of El Paso; three brothers, Enrique Moreno and Pedro Moreno, both of El Paso and Ignacio Moreno of Los Angeles, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Juanita G. Duran of Palacios, Eulalio Garcia Jr. of Upton, Ky., David Garcia of Durham, N. C. Victoria Reyes of Beeville, Martha Garcia and Teresa Vinyard of Bay City, Michael Garcia and Victor Garcia of Victoria, Carlos Garcia of Beeville and Krystal Garcia of Olivia; 28 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, Michaela Proctor, Hannah Viets, Toti Proctor and Elizabeth Viets; and a best friend of many years, Tony Atkinson.

  Blanca Margarita Moreno, 54, Port Lavaca, died Friday, Jan. 3, 2003.
  She was born Jan. 2, 1949 in Brownsville, the daughter of Estevan Tamayo Sr. and Maria Luisa Sosa Torres of Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico. She was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic Church.
  She was preceded in death by a sister, Socorro Tamayo.

Raneta Darlene Best Scott
  Raneta Darlene Best Scott, 65, of Port Lavaca, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003. She was born Dec. 2, 1937 in Houston, the daughter of the late W. W. Best and Geneva Robinett Best.
  She was a secretary for Calhoun County Independent School District and a member of the Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald B. Best.
  Survivors include her husband, Frank Scott of Port Lavaca; a daughter, Sheryl Lynn Scott Dettling of College Station; a son, Dwayne Frank Scott of Ganado; and 10 grandchildren.
  Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at the Port Lavaca Church of Christ with Shan Jackson officiating.Burial followed at Green Lawn Gardens Cemetery.

O.B. "Dutch" Cassel
  O. B. Dutch Cassel, 90, passed away at home Jan. 21, 2003.
  He was born July 8, 1912 in Wood County, the son of Virgil and Vanner Fowler Cassel.
  Cassel was on the board of directors for Moremon Community Gin. He was also a deacon at the Church of Christ and a past Calhoun County Farmer of the Year.
  Survivors include daughters Mary Elizabeth Guffey of Dallas and Mae Belle Cassel of Port Lavaca; son, Charles Crober of Port Lavaca; sisters, Irene Wilds of Corpus Christi and Phama Sneed of Victoria; 10 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He is survived by nieces and nephews
  O.B. was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Faye Crober Cassel, second wife Cora Belle Wilson Cassel, daughter Patty Sue Garner, sisters Mabel Nunley, Charlene Buckley, Opal Dickey, Alice Johnson; and brothers Verbal Cassel, Bryce Cassel and V. C. Cassel.
  Services for "Dutch" were 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, 2003 at the Church of Christ in Port Lavaca with Shan Jackson and O'Quinn Kelly officiating. Burial followed at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.

Jimmie Ray Maseda
  Jimmie Ray Maseda, 50, of Port Lavaca, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003.
  Maseda was born March 29, 1952 in Port Lavaca, the son of the late Arthur Maseda Sr. and Tommie Lara Maseda. He was a carpenter and an auto and motorcycle mechanic. He was a retired member of the U. S. Marine Corp. and a veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired as a private first class. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal with one star, the Rifle Marksman Badge and good conduct medal.
  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Pvt. Robert Maseda.
  Survivors include his wife, Ninfa Heysquierdo Maseda of Port Lavaca; two daughters, Jennifer Ray Taylor of Houston and Jessica Ray Witt of Port Lavaca; two sons, Jimmy Ray Maseda and Jonny Ray Maseda, both of Port Lavaca; four sisters, Judy Pizana of Victoria, Olga Maseda, Yolanda Ybarra and Evelyn Hysquierdo, all of Port Lavaca; a brother, Arthur Maseda Jr. of Houston; and seven grandchildren.
  A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4 at Artero Memorial Chapels. Visitation began at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be recited at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Port Lavaca Cemetery. Military honors will be under Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4403.

Robert "Buckwheat" McGinnis
  Robert "Buckwheat" McGinnis, 74, of Port O"Connor, died on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003.
  He was born in San Antonio on April 8, 1928, the son of the late Robert L. McGinnis and Bonnie McClillin McGinnis. He was married to the late Alice N. Jones McGinnis, who died in 1995. He was a retired welder.
  In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Francis Tripp.
  Survivors include three daughters, Linda Brown and Bonnie Ward of Port O"Connor and Pennie Furlow of Shelbyville; his companion Alberta Slaven of Port O"Connor, 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great- great-granddaughter.
  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at 4 p.m. at the Port O"Connor Cemetery.

Diane E. Dobie Kiser
  Diane E. Dobie Kiser, 46, a teacher at Calhoun High School, died Feb. 8, 2003.
  Diane was born April 24, 1956, in Spokane, Washington to Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Dobie Jr. Mr. Dobie preceded his daughter in death in 1978. She is survived by her husband, Dana E. Kiser; one daughter, Rebecca Ann Kiser age 11, her mother Mrs. JoAnn Bronzan of Lincoln, California, a brother Joseph W. Dobie III of Morro Bay California and an aunt Mrs. Eloise P. Burns of Port Lavaca.
  Diane attended elementary school in California before moving to Port Lavaca to live with her aunt Mrs. Burns. She graduated with honors from Calhoun High School and later got a BFA degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
  After graduation Diane spent several years in California and Arizona volunteering her services with Campus Crusade for Christ. She studied with the International School of Theology.
  Diane was a member in good standing at the Grace Community Bible Church in Victoria.
  Services will be conducted at Alamo Heights Baptist church, where Diane attended church in her youth. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a viewing at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home on Tuesday evening. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery.
Raymond H. Whittaker
  Raymond H. Whittaker, 87, of Port O"Connor, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 in Victoria.
  He was born in Saluria on March 6, 1915 to the late Edward T. Whittaker and Theresa A. Schuster Whittaker. He was a member of St. Joseph"s Catholic Church. He was a retired Master Chief of the U.S. Coast Guard serving 27 years. He was also retired after 12 years from Civil Services. He also served as president of the Calhoun County Independent School District school board.
  He is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Jewell Pearl Erwin Whittaker.
  He is survived by his daughter, Joy Reed of Victoria; son, Edward "Tim" Whittaker of Port O"Connor; sisters, Edna T. Whittaker and Lucille Whittaker, both of Port O"Connor; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
  A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11 at Colonial Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be recited at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Roger Hawes officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens under the auspices of the U.S. Coast Guard of Port O"Connor and the Victoria Veterans Council, VFW, CWV, DAV, Marine Corps League, Military Order of Purple Hearts, Crossroads Ex POWs, American Legion, Vietnam Veterans, Military and Order of World Wars.

Luis Orta Sr.
  Luis Orta Sr, 70, of Corpus Christi, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003. He was born Sept. 9, 1932 in Calhoun County, the son of the late Juan Orta and Lucia Gonzales Orta. He was a retired employee of Castro Fence Co. in Corpus Christi and a member of the Catholic Church.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Epifania "Fannie" G. Orta and Andrea Orta Bazan and a brother, Santiago G. Orta.
  He is survived by three daughters, Linda Orta Sims of Corpus Christi, Mary D. Orta Valadez of Port Lavaca and Angie Orta of Nixon; a son, Luis Orta Jr. of Missouri City; two sisters, Mary Orta Calzada and Rita Orta Ybarra, both of Port Lavaca; five brothers, Pedro C. Orta, Juan "Johnny" G. Orta and Savino G. Orta, all of Port Lavaca, Gregory G. Orta of Tuscon, Ariz. and Edward G. Orta Sr. of Victoria; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
  A funeral Mass was recited at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. Burial followed in the Port Lavaca Cemetery.

  Viola Trevino Castaneda, 67, of Corpus Christi, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003.
  She was born Nov. 21, 1935 in Hebbronville, the daughter of the late Victoriano Trevino and Cora Mesa Trevino. She was married to the late Jesus Y. Castaneda and a member of the Catholic Church.
  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David Victoriano Salazar Sr.; a sister, Sally Ferguson; and two brothers, Jacinto Trevino and Horacio Trevino.
  She is survived by three daughters, Diana Heysquierdo, of Port Lavaca, Letisia Castaneda of Corpus Christi and Elsa Alvarez of Victoria; three sons, Joe Daniel Salazar and Noe Salazar, both of Corpus Christi and Jesse Castaneda Jr. of Port Lavaca; a sister, Pearla Mendoza of Port Lavaca; a brother, Gilbert Trevino of Port Lavaca; 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

  Oscar B. Perales, 75, of Port Lavaca, died on Tuesday, March 18, 2003. He was born July 21, 1927 in Cerralvo, N. L. Mexico, the son of the late Perfecto Perales and Prota Barrera Perales. He was employed by Alcoa and a member of the Cornerstone Assembly of God Church.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Mario and Mariano Perales; a sister, Maria DeLos Angeles Perales and brother Guadalupe Perales.
  Survivors include his wife, Ester Pena Perales of Port Lavaca; daughters, Maria Elena Lopez, Elida Arriaga, Elsie Lara, Rebecca Villarreal and Raquel Martinez, all of Port Lavaca; a son, Rene Perales of Port Lavaca; sisters, Mercedes Pena of Victoria, Tomasa Rios of Monterey, Mexico, Isaura Guterres of Cerralvo, N. Irvin Louis Maeker
  Irvin Louis Maeker, 58, of Friendswood, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2003.
  He was born on Nov. 10, 1944 in Flatonia to the late Monroe and Catherine Harbich Maeker. He was a graduate of Calhoun High School and the University of Houston at the Houston campus. He taught at Pearland High School for 34 years, retiring in 2001. He was a member of Mary Queen Catholic Church in Friendswood.
  Survivors include his wife Terry Maeker; daughter Adrian McKinney of Friendswood; sons Michael and Scott Maeker of Houston; sisters Mary Jean Kaspar of Port Lavaca and Mae Allen of Richwood.
  Visitation will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday with a prayer service and rosary at 8 p.m. at Mary Queen Catholic Church. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bruce Kasper, Ricky Dalejsi, Dinnie Billings, Don Curry, Bill White and David Nicholson. Memorials are the donor"s choice.

Vincent Joseph Weber
  Vincent Joseph Weber, 74, of Port Lavaca died Thursday, March 27, leaving behind a lifetime of devotion to his family, his church and his community.
  Born on Nov. 1, 1928 in Victoria to the late Lynwood Albert and Josephine Scherlen Weber, he began working in what would become a 43-year career at the First State Bank of Port Lavaca, where, in 1992, he retired as senior vice- president/comptroller.
  After moving to Port Lavaca in 1956, he later met MaryEllen Sapsky of Galveston, who would become his loving wife of almost 40 successful years of marriage. From their lifelong union Vincent and MaryEllen had five children: Stephen Vincent Weber of San Antonio, Sally Jo Hsieh of Ypsilanti, Mich., David Timothy Weber of Austin, Charles Edward Weber of Albuquerque, N. M. and James John Weber of La Porte. Furthermore, Vincent and MaryEllen would eventually enjoy new additions to their family, grandsons Cameron Scott Weber and Grayson James Weber. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he is also survived by his brother Lynwood E. "Bob" Weber of Refugio. Vincent was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, William F. Weber and Frank Joseph Weber.
  Due to his dedication to his family, Vincent offered his support and his participation to the local organizations his children were involved in by serving as treasurer for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 361, the Order of the Sons of Hermann and the Calhoun High School Band Boosters. His devotion also included his service within his church and the community as a whole. He served as a devout member of Our Lady of The Gulf Catholic Church performing such duties as lecturer, treasurer and frequent volunteer. As a member of the community, he likewise volunteered his services time and time again as an active member in such organizations at the Knights of Columbus, the Calhoun County VFW Color Guard, the Port Lavaca Jaycees and most notably, as treasurer of the Port Lavaca Noon Day Lions Club for 35 years. With his passing, the Texas State House of Representatives adjourned Thursday, March 27, 2003 in his memory.
  Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003 at Our Lady of The Gulf Catholic Church in Port Lavaca. Grave side burial was at Memory Gardens in Victoria with full military honors by the Calhoun County VFW Post 4403.
  Pallbearers were Michael Balajka, Mark Daigle, Kenneth Wenske, Paul Michalik, Robert Hochstein, Ralph Cormier, Robert Anderle and Eugene Balajka.
  Honorary pallbearers were O. D. Atwell, Ray Sapsky, George Sapsky, the officers and co-workers at the First State Bank and Trust Company and the members of the Lions Club, the VFW, the Ladies Auxiliary and those too numerous to name who knew and loved him and his family.
  Memorials can be made to the Lions Club Crippled Children"s Camp in Kerrville, Noon Day Lions Club of Port Lavaca, Salem Lutheran Church Building Fund, St. Joseph High School Endowment Fund of Victoria and Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School.

Earnest B."Shorty" Plummer
  Earnest B. "Shorty" Plummer, 74, of Seadrift, died Friday, March 28, 2003. He was born March 17, 1929 in Smith Point in Chambers County, the son of the late Clifford Charles Plummer and Annie Barbara Plummer. He was a commercial fisherman.
  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clifford Plummer and Robert Plummer.
  Survivors include his wife, Faye Amason Plummer; daughter and son-in-law, Janet Faye Sargent and husband Jay Lee of Cedarburg, WI; sons, Terry Dean Plummer and wife Maylene of Seadrift, Rickey Lee Plummer of Port Lavaca and Earnest Ben Plummer Jr. and wife Diana of Seadrift; a sister, Mary Till of Jarrell; brother, Douglas Plummer of La Marque; and grandchildren, Dean Plummer, Brandon Plummer, Tyler Sargent, Amanda Plummer, Tara Plummer, Kara Plummer and Sara Plummer and Melissa Sargent.

  Helen Frances Mageluzzo, 87, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, April 1, at her home in Daytona Beach.
  A funeral Mass was recited at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Ormond Beach, Fla.
  She was a retired clerk for W.T. Grants Department Store in Waterbury, Ct. She was born at Port Washington on Long Island. She moved from Waterbury to Daytona Beach nine years ago.
  She was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel at Waterbury.
  She was married for 54 years to John Mageluzzo, who preceded her in death in 1995.
  Survivors include a son, Jack Mageluzzo of Port Lavaca; a daughter, Joan Bourassa of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a sister, Marie Mancini of Fairfield, Ct.; six grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

  Kenneth Martin "Grandad" Frank, 84, of Point Comfort, died on Tuesday, April 1, 2003.
  He was born April 9, 1918 in East St. Louis, Ill., the son of the late Henry Frank and Dora Dietrich-Frank. He was a machinist retired from Alcoa and a member of the Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Alcoa 25-Year Club and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
  Survivors include his wife, Marie Smith Frank of Point Comfort; two daughters, LeTricia Frank of Point Comfort and Natasha Frank of Victoria; a son, Ryan Fox of Port Lavaca; three grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Frank and Arnold Frank.

Melanie Marie Aguillard
  Melanie Marie Aguillard of Austin passed away at home on April 3, 2003.
  Melanie was born Sept. 2, 1947, in Mobile, AL and lived in the Austin area since 1972. She was preceded in death by her father, Capt. Rene S. Aguillard. She is survived by her loving mother Margaret Aguillard of Port Lavaca; sister Murray (and Douglas) Schiller of Riverside, CA; nephews Jordan Mossman of the U.S. Navy; Carter Mossman of Riverside, CA; and niece Lara-Ren"e Mossman of San Bernardino, CA.
  After earning her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1989, Melanie worked for the Veteran"s Administration traveling to all parts of the U.S. to audit VA hospitals.
  Melanie was a member of St. John Neumann"s Catholic Church. She had been an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society, the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Austin, and she was the foster parent to many grateful kittens.
  Melanie"s family and friends would like to express their sincere appreciation to the Christ Renews His Parish Women"s Team 17 of St John Neumann"s for their generous and caring assistance in the final months of her life.
  A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress.
  The funeral Mass will be at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 5455 Bee Cave Rd on Saturday, April 5 at 9 a.m. followed by a 4 p.m. graveside service at Green Lawn Gardens Cemetery in Port Lavaca. Dorothy M. Wilborn Harding
  Dorothy M. Wilborn Harding, 79, of Port Lavaca died April 6, 2003.
  She was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Port Lavaca, to the late Samuel Harrison and Ollie Mae Wilborn.
  She was a Christian woman who cared for her husband, children and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren greatly.
  She is survived by her daughter Belinda Kimball of Smithville, Cynthia Frazier of Oklahoma City, Elizabeth Grubbs of Port Lavaca, one son Fletcher Harding, daughter-in-law Sherilyn Harding of Seadrift, one sister Pearl Schuelke and sister-in-law June Hahn. Seven grandchildren - Kendra Grubbs, Aaron Kimball, Justin Kimball, Garrett Frazier, Derrick Frazier and Stephanie Harding; five great-grandchildren - Ashleigh Persilver, Kaitlynn Grubbs, Sierra Flores, Colton Kimball, Kyleigh Grubbs; five nephews and nieces.
  She is preceded in death by her husband Arthur L. Harding, who she married on April 5, 1942, two brothers Earl and Sonny Wilborn, one sister Lee Shafer, one son-in-law Calvin Grubbs, three brother-in-laws - Milton McCarty, Otto Schuelke, Lester Shafer and one granddaughter- Ginny Persilver.
  Services were conducted at 1 1 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Port Lavaca with Shan Jackson and Will McDonnald officiating, followed by grave side services at Greenlawn Garden Cemetery.

Callie Grantland
  Callie Grantland, 81, a resident of Los Chavez, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2003.
  She was raised in a Pentecostal Church and she loved to shop at the Flea Market on the weekends.
  Callie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Neal Grantland in 1994; her three brothers; and three sisters.
  Callie is survived by her daughter, Viola Bell of Los Chavez; her three sons, Charles and his wife, Peggy of Buffalo, TX; Don and his wife, Sue of Bosque Farms, NM; and Jack and his wife, Jerriene of Veguita, NM; her brother, Coy Truelove from Rockport, TX; her 11 grandchildren; and 29 great grandchildren.
  She is also survived by her loving nieces and nephews
  A funeral service was held on Monday, April 7, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Boyd Morerod officiating at the Romero Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed at the Terrace Grove Cemetery.

Steven Edward Marvin
  Steven Edward Marvin, 40, of Port Lavaca, died Friday, April 4, 2003.
  He was born Feb. 28, 1963 in San Antonio, the son of Ed Marvin of San Antonio and Patsy O"Neal Marvin of Wichita Falls. Steve graduated from East Central High School in 1981. He was an electrical designer of Testengeer, Inc. and owned Marvin Gardens and Landscape Designs. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Steve enjoyed his work, but most of all he enjoyed his family and friends.
  In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife Wendy King Marvin of Port Lavaca; a grandmother, Georgie O"Neal of Gonzales; three children, Kade Allan Marvin of Port Lavaca, Kingslee January of Port Lavaca and Joshua Wayne Marvin of Wharton; a sister, Jana Marvin of Wichita Falls; and a brother, Richard Marvin of Dallas.
  Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Monday, April 7 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers were Donny Sparks, Christopher Taylor, Jared McGrew, Larry Fleeman, Jason Brumfield, Bubba Smith, Ron Adrian and Luis Cruz. Honorary pallbearers were Byron Cumberland, Bobby Mietzer, all of the Testengeer employees and the BP I & E Shop.
  A scholarship fund has been set up for the children of Steve and Wendy Marvin at the First National Bank, P. O. Drawer 7, Port Lavaca, Tx. 77979. Mark envelopes scholarship for Marvin children.
  Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Richardson/Colonial Funeral Home, 552-2988.

Carlton Wayne "Pete" Hall
  Carlton Wayne "Pete" Hall, 68, of Seadrift, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003.
  He was born Nov. 17, 1934 in Algiers, La., to the late Carlton William "Cat" and Dora Leottice Hall.
  Pete was an independent businessman, owner of CabTex Custom Cabinets. He served as president of the School Board for Calhoun County ISD 1985 -1990. He was also a Vestry Member and Sr. Warden of Grace Episcopal Church. Mr. Hall was active with the Boy Scouts of America for 32 years serving as: Cub Master Pack 106 of Seadrift for five years, Scout Master Troop 106 for 20 years, District Commissioner of the Indianola District for 10 years and Committee Chairman of the Seadrift Scouting Committee for 12 years. He received many awards during his many years of involvement with the Scouts: the Wood Badge Award in 1986 and the Scouting Silver Beaver Award in 1982, the highest award the Boy Scouts can bestow upon a leader.
  Survivors, include: wife, Lea Hall of Seadrift; sister, Wilma Sanchez and husband Andy of Seadrift and Nelda Rivera of Seadrift; son, Carlton Jenson Hall and wife Lorna of San Marcos; daughter, Tyra Hall Randall and husband Bruce of Houston; grandchildren, Garrett William Randall and Brandon Wayne Randall both of Houston and Ian Paul Hall and Carlton William Hall of San Marcos; and special friends, Patrick Henley, Andy Kolar, George Andrus, Scott and Valerie Rehm and the girls, Nancy Childress, Earl and Betty Keith, Milton and Roberta Hausmann, Linda Logan, Myrtle Montier and the many friends and family of Seadrift and Calhoun County.
  Services were at 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2003 at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. Canon Robert Francis DeWolfe and Rev. Howard Hartzog officiating. Burial followed at Seadrift Cemetery.
  Memorials can be made to Grace Episcopal Church or Boy Scouts of America Troop 106, Seadrift, Texas.
  Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ruby Joyce Allen Guilbeau
  Ruby Joyce Allen Guilbeau, 74, of Port Lavaca, died Saturday, April 26. 2003 following a two-year battle with cancer.
  Ruby was born in Caldwell, TX on March 19, 1929 to the late Richard and Ruby Ethel Crawford Allen. A resident of Port Lavaca for over 40 years, Ruby was a retired nurse for Memorial Medical Center, member of Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church and loving mother and wife. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family and the gentle kindness she showed to those around her.
  Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Julien Guilbeau; sons Rick Guilbeau of Round Rock and Tracy Guilbeau of Houston; two grandchildren Christopher Allen Guilbeau of Dallas and Melissa Nicole Guilbeau of Arlington.
  A rosary was recited at the Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home chapel on Sunday evening. Services were held at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church. with the Rev. Dan Morales officiating. Burial was at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery.
  Pallbearers were Christopher Guilbeau, Benny Garcia, Elo Pelech, MiIton Pfeifer, Mi1ton Roeder and Paul Michalek.
