TX Query for ROBERTS and
LOWE
ROBERTS, LOWE:
After reviewing the 1860 and 1870 Cherokee Co. TX census records, I
believe I have found the elusive Nancy Picola LOWE, born 21 Dec 1829 in
TN, who married a ROBERTS (according to family info). In 1860,
the family I located lived among many LOWE family members and only one
house down from Nancy Picola's brother. Again, on the 1870 census,
Nancy (now the head of
household) is living among many LOWE relatives. Here is the info from
the census:
1860 Cherokee Co. TX, page 433, family 300: William ROBERTS, age 36,
farmer, born TN
wife, Nancy, age 30, born TN children: J.H., age 9 male, born
TN; C.L., male, age 6, born TX; Mary H., age 4, female, born TX;
Cansada C. (sp?), age 2 female, born TX; and a farmworker named James IVY,
age 25, born in NC. The 1870 Cherokee Co. TX census, page 220, family
382 lists: Nancy ROBERTS, age 39, b:TN children: Isaac H., age 18,
b: TN; Charles L., age
17, born TX; Mary E., abe 14, b.TX; Cansada C. (sp?) age 13, b.: TX;
William R.C., age 6, born TX; and John T., age 3, born in TX. Is this Nancy
Picola LOWE?
Thanks.

ROBERTS
Is the Nancy ROBERTS I have located on the 1860 and 1870 Cherokee Co.
TX census records the same as my Nancy Picola LOWE (born 21 Dec 1829) who
married a ROBERTS? I think so, but does anyone have further info?
According to the census (if this is the right family), Nancy was
married to a William ROBERTS, born abt 1824 in TN. William is on
the 1860 but not 1870
census. In 1870, Nancy is listed as head of household.
Children listed were:
1, Isaac H., born abt 1852 in TN
2. Charles L., born abt 1853 in TX
3. Mary E. or H., born abt 1856 in TX
4. Cansada C. (not sure if I read that correctly off the census----very
difficult to make out the letters), female, born abt 1857 in TX
5. William R.C., born abt 1864 in TX
6. John T., born abt 1867 in TX.
This family lived right in among all her LOWE, NEWMAN, and other
relatives so it appears to be the correct family. If you have info
to rule this out or confirm it, please notify me.

Dixon and Alexander family
My grandparents, Alonzo Kent Dixon and Sophronia Alexander both went
to Old Larissa College. As a child, I used to go to the wonderful
outdoor reunions with long tables of indescribably good
food. Once, I even had to "recite" a poem my grandfather had written
-- "I wonder, ah, I
wonder." I know that A. K.Dixon taught at Larissa and had come
from Tennessee with his mother,
but do not know the date. My grandmother and he eloped from the college, had
four sons, Uhlan,
Kenneth, Ford, and Frank (died when he was a law student at U. of Texas
in 1924 or 1925), and a
daughter, Bess Marie, my mother.
A.K. was a traveling man for Armour for a while, going into Mexico to
manage getting bat guano
for fertilizer, was a specialist in growing tomatoes, and had something
to do with the newspaper the "Jacksonville Progress." He was a Democrat.
Sophia and he were both Presbyterians, I believe. She taught "expression,"
was quite active in
church, and the house she and A.K. lived in on Crepe Myrtle Drive belonged
to her father who
was 18 during the Civil War and led a mule train of supplies somewhere
in Texas to Confederate
soldiers. I only know him from a picture of him in a wheelchair.
She had three brothers two of
whom, I believe, lived in Jacksonville--I remember them as Uncle Mel,
Uncle Sank, and there was
an Uncle Robert who lived in a nearby town.
The house is on a hill from which one can see in the far distance some railroad tracks (I remember listening to the old hooting whistle when I was a child).Down the road was the box factory where baskets were made for tomatoes to be shipped out. People named the Tiptons lived on one side, the Godsey and the Pearmans down the hill across the road. The house is now occupied by Leota Pearman Dixon, Kenneth Dixon's wife, and their son, also Kenneth, and their family. When I was a child, Ford, his wife Kathleen Trammell, and two children, Gene and Dorothy Lynn, my cousins, lived there with my grandparents.
I would like to know more about what my grandfather taught at Larissa
and what part of
Tennessee he came from.

Subject: RUTHERFORD
This will take som explaining, so I hope no one gets confused.
ROBERT D. RUTHERFORD was born in 1811, KY-possibly Floyd County, or
perhaps even TN. He was an early pioneer to TX as he receieved land in
the Austin Colony issued Oct.30, 1839. He came from Hinds Co., MS where
he appears on the Census there in 1830. He is listed in the Deed Abstracts
of 1837-1852 with 640 acres dated Mar.31, 1840. While he does not appear
on the 1840 Census, this is probably due to a separation from his wife
Harriet. Harriet E. Simpson, daughter of James A. Simpson, was born in
AL, but married Robert in Hinds Co., MS. While it is plausible they had
other children, their most noted was Christopher Columbus Rutherford born
in Bastrop County in 1839. He became an early pioneer doctor.
Anyway! Robert and Harriet split. she sold off his land to pay for her son's schooling at Tulane in LA. They were divorced in 1846, as she appears as herself with her maiden name (she died in 1858, Robertson Co.) and he appears then in 1850 Census in Cherokee Co. with his second wife Martha ___, born 1812, KY. They had two daughters listed there, and judging by the birthdates, he must've married her right after or before his divorce. I surmise he and Martha were married in Nacogdoches County. I think Robert ends up in Travis County in 1860, but wasn't able to find out at the moment.
Has anyone run across this family in Cherokee County. His daughters are Mary A. E. Rutherford and Rebecca Rutherford. I have found other Rutherfords there in Cherokee County but don't know their relationship, if any. This information has been a long time in pieceing together, yet I have not found any Rutherford descendants to correspond with.

Subject: Cherokee Co. TX Query for ROBERTS and LOWE
ROBERTS, LOWE:
After reviewing the 1860 and 1870 Cherokee Co. TX census records, I believe I
have found the elusive Nancy Picola LOWE, born 21 Dec 1829 in TN, who married a
ROBERTS (according to family info). In 1860, the family I located lived among
many LOWE family members and only one
house down from Nancy Picola's brother. Again, on the 1870 census, Nancy (now
the head of
household) is living among many LOWE relatives. Here is the info from the
census:
1860 Cherokee Co. TX, page 433, family 300: William ROBERTS, age 36, farmer,
born TN
wife, Nancy, age 30, born TN children: J.H., age 9 male, born TN; C.L., male,
age 6, born TX; Mary H., age 4, female, born TX; Cansada C. (sp?), age 2 female,
born TX; and a farmworker named James IVY, age 25, born in NC. The 1870 Cherokee
Co. TX census, page 220, family
382 lists: Nancy ROBERTS, age 39, b:TN children: Isaac H., age 18, b: TN;
Charles L., age
17, born TX; Mary E., abe 14, b.TX; Cansada C. (sp?) age 13, b.: TX; William

Subject: William and Nancy Picola (LOWE) ROBERTS
Is the Nancy ROBERTS I have located on the 1860 and 1870 Cherokee Co. TX
census records the same as my Nancy Picola LOWE (born 21 Dec 1829) who married a
ROBERTS? I think so, but does anyone have further info? According to the census
(if this is the right family), Nancy was married to a William ROBERTS, born abt
1824 in TN. William is on the 1860 but not 1870
census. In 1870, Nancy is listed as head of household. Children listed were:
1, Isaac H., born abt 1852 in TN
2. Charles L., born abt 1853 in TX
3. Mary E. or H., born abt 1856 in TX
4. Cansada C. (not sure if I read that correctly off the census----very
difficult to make out the letters), female, born abt 1857 in TX
5. William R.C., born abt 1864 in TX
6. John T., born abt 1867 in TX.
This family lived right in among all her LOWE, NEWMAN, and other relatives
so it appears to be the correct family. If you have info to rule this out or
confirm it, please notify me.

My grandparents, Alonzo Kent Dixon and Sophronia Alexander both went to Old
Larissa College. As a child, I used to go to the wonderful outdoor reunions
with long tables of indescribably good
food. Once, I even had to "recite" a poem my grandfather had written -- "I
wonder, ah, I
wonder." I know that A. K.Dixon taught at Larissa and had come from Tennessee
with his mother,
but do not know the date. My grandmother and he eloped from the college, had four
sons, Uhlan,
Kenneth, Ford, and Frank (died when he was a law student at U. of Texas in 1924
or 1925), and a
daughter, Bess Marie, my mother.
A.K. was a traveling man for Armour for a while, going into Mexico to manage
getting bat guano
for fertilizer, was a specialist in growing tomatoes, and had something to do
with the newspaper the "Jacksonville Progress." He was a Democrat.
Sophia and he were both Presbyterians, I believe. She taught "expression,"
was quite active in
church, and the house she and A.K. lived in on Crepe Myrtle Drive belonged to
her father who
was 18 during the Civil War and led a mule train of supplies somewhere in Texas
to Confederate
soldiers. I only know him from a picture of him in a wheelchair. She had three
brothers two of
whom, I believe, lived in Jacksonville--I remember them as Uncle Mel, Uncle
Sank, and there was
an Uncle Robert who lived in a nearby town.
I would like to know more about what my grandfather taught at Larissa and
what part of
Tennessee he came from.

my g-grandparents. I know they had at least one son, Cliftpn Darden. I have the

Maggie Bell was in the Rush Nursing home until 1963, at which time she was 92
yrs. old. I was also told that the Dardens married Trotters in the Dialsville
area. Any information would be very much appreciated, especially the name of
George Washington and Maggie Bell Darden's

Subject: Wilmoth Franklin GARRETT and Mary Eliza DOTSON
Does anyone on the list have information on the family of Wilmoth Franklin
GARRETT and Mary Eliza DOTSON? He was the son of Robert M. GARRETT and Emily
Frances MATHEWS, born in 1884, died in 1968. He is buried in New Summerfield,
Cherokee Co. TX. Mary Eliza was daughter of Josiah DOTSON and Sarah Amanda
LEVERTON, born in 1872 , died 1909 in Cherokee Co. They had at least 1 child: a
daughter named Nora Novice, b. 1902 and marr. in
1918 to Finus DOTSON, b. 1896, d. 1980.
I am in hopes that someone may be tracing this GARRETT family's ancestry and can help me learn more about W.F.'s mother, Emily Frances. She was a sister to my gg-grandmother, Epsey Mason MATHEWS. I have been told the Emily Frances died in 1862, but do you know where? Did she die before the family left Alabama or after they got to Texas? Did W.F.'s father, Robert, remarry after Emily F. died?
I have other MATHEWS info that I'll be happy to share if this is your line.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone on the list can answer my questions!

Hello, I am looking for any info on my grandmother, her name was Lucille
Bernie Smith she was born 8-11-1909 in Fannin Co., Texas and died 4-24-1991
Kings Co., CA. I have her social security application which states her parents
are Albert Smith and Wille Tacker. I have found in the 1920 census for Cherokee
Co. a family #204 Thacker, Henry head 53, Julia wife 50, Asberry
son 16, Smith, Lucille granddaughter 12, Lou???? grandson 10. This looks like
it could be my Lucille the only thing is that the family is listed as black
(which of course is not impossible), we are
caucasion (as far as I know anyways...haha) the whole page that they are listed
on is black so I dont see that it might be a mistake. My question is how do I
go about finding out if this is indeed my grandmother?
Thank you

Subject: RUTHERFORD
This will take som explaining, so I hope no one gets confused.
ROBERT D. RUTHERFORD was born in 1811, KY-possibly Floyd County, or perhaps even
TN. He was an early pioneer to TX as he receieved land in the Austin Colony
issued Oct.30, 1839. He came from Hinds Co., MS where he appears on the Census
there in 1830. He is listed in the Deed Abstracts of 1837-1852 with 640 acres
dated Mar.31, 1840. While he does not appear on the 1840 Census, this is
probably due to a separation from his wife Harriet. Harriet E. Simpson, daughter
of James A. Simpson, was born in AL, but married Robert in Hinds Co., MS. While
it is plausible they had other children, their most noted was Christopher
Columbus Rutherford born in Bastrop County in 1839. He became an early pioneer
doctor.
