"On Friday, September 13,
1935, John Grammer celebrated the opening
of Grammer's Department Store, having
purchased the store from the Hemphill
Wells Company. Coming from San
Angelo to Coleman in 1932 as manager of
the Hemphill Robertson Company, and later
the Hemphill Wells Company, John Grammer
purchased from them the store that is now
Grammer's. During the twenty-three
years Grammer's has been in business in
Coleman, they state, "It has been our
policy to offer to the people of Coleman
County only the best quality and finest
branded lines of merchandise for every
member of the family." Among the
sales personnel is Miss Borgia Ray, who
has been with the store since it first
opened. Mr. and Mrs. G. G. Grammer,
who came to Coleman in 1937 to become
associated with the store, and Mrs.
Elizabeth Grammer, wife of John
Grammer." (Coleman Democrat-Voice,
Jubilee Issue, 1951)
In 1976, after 41
continuous years, Robert and Retha Yates
purchased the business from Elizabeth
Grammer. The Yates continue the
tradition of serving Coleman County with
quality wornen's and children's apparel.
