Rockwell Bros. & Co.
Lumbermen opened its doors for business in
Coleman in 1924, building its yard on land
that at one time was the location for
Leeper Bros. & Co. who were engaged in
the lumber business. The yard was
operated for the first seven years by one
of the founder's sons, Henry M.
Rockwell. These early years were
frustrating ones for young Henry, who
constantly wrote to his father that he was
missing too much business and could not
close the sales, and his father would
reply; "Henry, you are doing fine, just
stay in there and pitch. Then later,
in 1926, Henry would write "Lots of
building going on at present — in fact,
you can't realize how much is taking
place."
R. Floyd Price
had been with Rockwell Lumber Company as
bookkeeper in Waxahachie for several years
prior to his coming to Coleman, October
19, 1926, to assist Henry Rockwell with
the operation of a growing new lumber yard
in a growing town. Price was born in
Italy, Ellis County, Texas and brought
with him to Coleman his wife, Aubie and
two sons, Floyd Jr. and James
Preston. Later a daughter, Helen,
was born, who is now Mrs. Rex Jones.
In 1931, the
death of Mr. Rockwell Sr., made it
necessary for Henry to devote his full
time to the main office in Houston and R.
Floyd Price was made manager. In the
ensuing years, R. B. & Co. and R.
Floyd Price served Coleman and Coleman
County well with many different people
being employed at various times.
Several employees trained by Mr. Price
went on to be managers at other R. B.
& Co. locations. In the spring
of 1949, Kenneth Newman was employed as
bookkeeper to help relieve the load on
Lloyd Hurst, the Ass't. Mgr. at the
time. Late in the 1950's, Lloyd went
on to be manager of the yard in Rotan,
Texas and Kenneth was made Ass't.
Manager. R. Floyd Price stepped down
from the local manager post in 1967,
moving Newman to that position.
In 1979, Kenneth
and his wife Dora Ann bought the yard and
now operate it as Rockwell Bros. & Co.
of Coleman. Members of the First
United Methodist Church, Kenneth, Dora Ann
and daughter Leslie are proud to be a part
of the heritage of Coleman County.
