Robert Samuel Brusenhan was
the seventh child of William Patrick and
Kassiah (Murphy) Brusenhan. (See James
Campbell King and L. J. Livingston
families). William Patrick was in
the Confederate Army, per papers given to
me by Robert Samuel's cousin, Annie
Shelton, daughter of Joseph Robert and
Betty (Brusenhan) Shelton. On the
1880 Falls County census, Robert's age was
8; he came to Rockwood in the mid
1890's. Ada Johnson was born May,
1877, in Dinero, Texas, daughter of Thomas
Jefferson, born November 24, 1851, and
Catherine (Fox) Johnson, born February 19,
1858.
The Johnsons came
to Coleman County in 1879. The Foxes
and Johnsons were from Ireland, and were
Catholics. The only story I have
heard about Thomas J. was that his
children forbade him to ride his horse
when he reached age 90, but he slipped
off, and returning in happy spirits,
demonstrating his horsemanship. As
his horse jumped the fence, Grandpa fell
off; never quite recovering from the fall,
and died November 24, 1943. Catherine died
July 17, 1934, both buried in Rockwood
(see John Perry Richardson).
Robert Samuel
Brusenhan and Ada Johnson were married
August 24, 1896, in Coleman, by the
Catholic priest from Brownwood, Father A.
O'Hara. Robert Samuel and Ada
separated. He died July 12, 1929,
buried in Breckenridge, Ada in 1942,
buried in Rockwood. They had seven
children:
(1) Robert
Kenneth married Nora Burns, they live near
Rockwood.
(2) Ernest Curtis
and (3) Emmett Curtis were (what you might
call) school dropouts. They quit
school, traveled to Tennessee and got a
job with DuPont. After working
several months, they chose to return to
Rockwood and school. The next dream
was California, but certain women faded
that dream some, and they went to A&M
for a session. Ernest Curtis
returned home and married Cleo Belle
Redding of Coleman, daughter of George
Keaton, born in Meridian, Mississippi, and
part Chickasaw Indian, and Melchora Ledora
(Pearson) Redding. They were married
by Cleo's grandfather, Rev. D. S. Pearson,
a Methodist circuit rider. They had
five children. They lived on Brush
Street until their house burned, then
Ernest moved his family to the edge of
town. Cleo died in 1942. Their
children:
(2a)
Ernestine, (deceased);
(2b)
Eugene Curtis (now deceased), married
Virginia Bandy, three children: Michael
Curtis, James Kelly and Molly Louise, who
married Terrell Martin Hale, they have a
daughter, Tiffiany;
(2c)
Donald Robert married (1) Elve Jean
Curtis, (2) Bobbie. Children:
(a) Robert Curtis and Rubby have Bobby
Don, Michael and Ashly;
(b) Billy and Cindy Edwards have Brad and
Bryan;
(c) Debra Jean (Savage) has TJay and
Jayme;
(d) Judy Kay and Randy Baines have Travis
and Troy;
(2d) Marcus Wayne and Zoe Ella Harrington
have Dwayne Keaton and John David;
(2e)
James Edward married Belva Sue Neal and
they have Jimmye Sue and Marla
Belle. They live in Midland, where
James works for Newhall Resources . Wayne
lives in Victoria where he works for
DuPont. Donald lives in
Andrews. Emmett Curtis married
Charolita Beamer, they have
(3a) Emmelietta, married Alvin Hoskins,
have John Alvin Il and Rebel Courtney;
(3b) Patricia, married Gordon Calwell,
have Shealea, Joshua Emmett and
Jacob. All of these lived around
Thomas, Oklahoma.
Emmett's oldest
grandchild is 14, and he and Ernest are a
grand ole 84, and still look-alikes.
(Emmett died February 4, 1984).
(4) Ouida Irene
married Ted Cox, they have one daughter,
Thelma Jo, who married Bill Van Meter,
they have Elaine, Denise and Edwin, living
in Weatherford and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
(5) Robert Lee
married Alice Hammet, they have
(5a)
Robert Lee, Jr., married Lollie Wright,
they had Kimble, Robert Lee III, and Anne;
Kimble married William Byrd Cavender, Jr.;
(5b)
Harry and Laura have four children: Nancy,
Susan, Laura Lisbeth and Harry J.;
(5c)
James Richard and his wife live in
Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is a
doctor. The rest mostly live in the
San Antonio area, where Grandpa Robert is
a druggist, along with Harry and Robert,
Jr.
(6) Blanche
Beatrice (1914-1924) buried in Rockwood.
(7) Thomas
Johnson is buried in California.
As of March,
1983, Ernest has been a widower for over
40 years. He, with the help of his
mother-in-law, and many school teachers
who taught the boys, managed to keep the
family intact. They belong either to
the Methodist or Baptist church, and are
all Masons . Eugene was in World War II, a
Marine. Jim and Wayne are graduates
of Texas A & I University.
Ernest can be found nearly every day of
the week, checking his post office box for
mail from his boys; having morning coffee
at the Owl, and then over to Congers for
dinner. Sundays, he is at the First
Methodist Church; after all these years,
his schedule is pretty well set — without
a doubt, Coleman is "home"' for Ernest.
