Alexander Jasper Burford was
the fifth of fourteen children born to
Alexander Mitchell Burford, February 26,
1807 in Giles County, Tennessee - February
25, 1890 in Mississippi, and Jane Lewter,
October 11, 1816 in North Carolina - July
29, 1879 in Mississippi. Alexander
Jasper grew up and went to school in Tate
County. It was here that he met his
wife-to-be, Mary Jane Jackson, daughter of
Andrew Jackson and Martha Culp. (The
Jacksons were relatives of President
Andrew Jackson). Alexander J. and
Mary Jane were married in Desota County
December 20, 1860. Soon after their
marriage and the birth of their first son,
Alexander enlisted in the Confederate army
at Cortinth, Mississippi, March 1, 1862, a
member of Company A. 10th Mississippi
Regiment of Infantry. He was engaged
in several battles, captured November 30,
1864, and made prisoner of war at the
Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. He
was sent to Camp Douglas in Chicago,
Illinois and released June 18, 1865.
In 1869, the
Alexander J. Burford family caught a bpat
at Memphis, Tennessee, and came down the
Mississippi River to New Orleans, from
there they went by ox cart to Tarrant
County, Texas. Then moved to Parker
County and around 1871, to Runnels County
near the city of Content. They moved
to Coleman County in 1876. They had
14 children, Daniel Layfayette, Lee, Ada,
Otis Franklin, Margaret, Tolbert, Minnie,
Jasper Lenard, William Baxter, Mattie,
Effie, Bert, Myrtle and Courtney.
The old Burford homeplace is very near the
city of Goldsboro, where they farmed and
raised cattle. The children went to
school at Opossum Trot near
Goldsboro. They were members of the
Church of Christ. The Alexander
Jasper Burford family left Coleman County
in 1898, yet Daniel and Otis continued to
live on the old home place for several
years. Alexander J. moved to Snyder
in Scurry County. He died September
28, 1901 and Mary, May 17, 1917.
Daniel L. Burford
married Josephine Burson, daughter of
Isaac Jackson Burson and Mary Ann Carroll,
October 19, 1884. They are both
buried at Midway Cemetery. He died
October 22, 1922 and Mary, January 7,
1951. Two of their five children are
buried there, Jodie Eric and Wirt D.
Lessie Isaac is buried in Reeves County
and Flossie and Conner are still
living. She is 94 and he is 88.
