The John Henry Burkett Family - Family Histories

      John Henry Burkett was born June 1, 1868 in Lavaca County and died March 26, 1912. He married Laura Lou Clarke (see James Lindsey Clarke), (born April 21, 1876 and died September 23, 1957) on January 11, 1893, both buried at Burkett. John was the son of John and Elizabeth Burkett (see John Burkett.) Their children are:

     (1) Gustavis, born April 4, 1894, and died April 1, 1956. He married Beulah Respis. They were divorced, and he married Hilda. He served in World War l, they had no children.

     (2) Thomas Jefferson, born July 9, 1896 in Burkett and died August 29, 1906 (burned to death in a house fire). He was buried in Burkett.

     (3) Alice, born June, 1898 and died November 15, 1918 (in Burkett). She was married December 23, 1915 to Young Beauregard Johnson. They had a daughter, Addie Lou, born August 20, 1917, married William (Bill) Mann in 1940. They have two children, Charles William and Martha.

     (4) Jim Clarke, born March 20, 1901 and died December 19, Burkett) was married April 16, 1922 to Ocie Edington. They had one child, J. C., born June 24, 1923, who died of cancer February 11, 1982 and was buried at Burkett.

     (5) Hubert Coleman, born July 16, 1903 and died March 19, 1979, was married on May 24, 1929 to Dorothy Bevins, born February 3, 1900 and died March 6, 1982. Both are buried at Burkett, they had no children.

     (6) Clarence, born September 23, 1905 in Burkett, was married June 25, 1933 to Minnie Estelle Wesley (see John William Wesley), born May 28, 1910 in Burkett. Clarence farmed until 1949 when he was injured in an accident. Before he married he was in the army three years. Minnie taught school 40 years, 24 of which were in Coleman. Their children: Charles Ann, born July 25, 1944 in Brownwood. She married Ralph Shonts on May 6, 1967, they have two children, Vallerie Michelle (born March 10, 1971) and Michael (born May 18, 1973). Ann and Ralph are divorced, she lives in Horn Lake, Mississippi. Joe David was born April 5, 1947 in Brownwood and married Gail Boldt, June 22, 1968 (see Weldon W. Boldt). They have two children, Jennifer Denise (born February 11, 1971) and Jeffery Bryan (born March 16, 1975).

     (7) Henry Noland, born November 24, 1908, died May 11, 1970 in a car wreck near Cisco, buried at Burkett, married in 1933 to Allie Pearl Hill (see John Howe). They had two daughters, Colleen, born March 9, 1936, Santa Anna, married October 2, 1954, Don Melton Gray, born January 18, 1936. Their children: David Keith, born October 31, 1955, married June 8, 1979, Darlene Benoit, born December 3, 1953; Martha Lou, born October 23, 1957, married May 19, 1978, John Owings, born April 3, 1956, divorced 1982; Tammy Ruth, born August 24, 1959. Colleen is a housewife and lives in Hurst. Bettie Sue, born February 21, 1940, Santa Anna, married (1) June 24, 1956, L. B. Yates, Jr., born April 2, 1936, divorced 1960. Their children: Kimberly Anne, born December 19, 1957, married December 31, 1977, Raymond Lynn Tatom, born April 19, 1957 and Jerry Lynn, born April 1, 1959, married January 19, 1979, Alma Caroline Berten, born October 5, 1958, divorced 1983. Bettie married (2) June 20, 1973, Morris Ray Cavanaugh, born August 24, 1936. They have one daughter, Elizabeth Jane, born August 27, 1974. They live near Cross Plains, where Morris is engaged in farming and ranching and oil field work, and Bettie works at the bank in Cross Plains.

     (8) Carmelita was born December 14, 1910 (in Burkett) and married December 2, 1932 to Alex Thames (born April 8, 1905 and died October 16, 1981, buried in Fairview Cemetery). He was in farming, ranching and oil field work. Carmelita lives in Brownwood. Their children are: Dale (born September 17, 1933), who married December 15, 1955 to Edna Manitzas Kileen. He served 20 years in the service, they have two children: Teresa Dale (December 8, 1959) and Finley Bill (November 2, 1961). Nancy Thames (born March 23, 1943), married August 4, 1962 to James Hudson. They had one child, Kimberly, and are now divorced. She lives in Shreveport, Louisiana.

     (9) Mary Henrietta, born October 3, 1912 Burkett, was married September 16, 1932 to Terrell Jackson, born September 24, 1907, and died January 21, 1953 (buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Cisco). Terrell worked in the oil field. They had one child, Kay, who married Roberta Hamilton and have two children, Terrell Kay and Bryan Ray.
