Uriah Nicholas "Nick"
Carriger, August 14, 1855 in Overton, Rusk
County - April 23, 1930 in Wink, buried at
Coleman, was the eldest or the seven
children of Ido Carriger and Mourning
Riddle who died in 1871. Shortly
thereafter, Ido moved the family to Hunt
County where Nick married (1) Margaret
Elizabeth "Lizzy" Lisenbee, April 14, 1869
- January 12, 1891, buried in Rock Creek
Cemetery near Glen Rose, on December 16,
1885. Two daughters, Maud and
Mae. Nick married (2) Mary Elizabeth
"Lizzy" Tillerson, born August 14, August
27, 1891 in Glen Rose, the daughter of
William Tillerson and Judith Rebecca
Pettit.
In December 1904,
they loaded their belongings, family and
dog, "Nig" in a covered wagon and set out
for Coleman, settling in the Hardin
community. They arrived on Christmas
Day, and moved in the old ranch house of
J. W. Cox. The people of the
community were very friendly and they
sponsored a large welcoming party with a
dance and fiddle playing contest. Nick and
Lizzy had six children that moved to
Coleman County with them, Inez, Ernest,
Ido, Dewey, Neda and Nora, and they had
two boys born after they moved here,
William Estel and Sam Alvie. The
children all grew up and attended school a
round Hardin and Gouldbusk. They
raised cotton and maize and all the
children helped in the fields. Nick
retired in 1929. The family was
grown, some of them married, and had begun
to scatter. The boys were working in
the oil fields in Jal, New Mexico.
Their daughter, Neda's husband, Sam Holt,
went to Gouldbusk and moved Nick and Lizzy
to Jal. Nick died April 23, 1930, in
Wink, buried at Coleman.
The depression
was at its worst, the boys lost their jobs
and they moved again, looking for work;
Lizzy moved around, living with different
ones of the family. While living at
Moran, she suffered a massive heart attack
and died April 9, 1940, buried beside Nick
in Coleman.
