Al (Isom Alfred), the only
son of Isom Alfred and Stella Chambers,
born February, 1927, served in the U. S.
Navy during World War II. He
attended Daniel Baker College and
Brownwood Commercial College.
Sammie, youngest child of Sam and Ruby
Smith, was born September 1928, and
attended Howard Payne College. She
married Alfred (Al) Chambers in November
1948 in Brownwood. Both Al and
Sammie were raised in Brownwood, attended
Brownwood schools and graduated from
Brownwood High School. They have
four children:
(1) Alfreda Lynn, born
January, 1950, graduated from Coleman High
School in 1968, attended Tarleton College
in Stephenville, married Charles Glenn
Shepard from Ballinger in August,
1970. They have two daughters, both
born in Coleman, Jodie Maurine, December
1975, and Mikayla Joylynn, May 1978.
They now live in Snyder.
(2) Phillip
Irvin, November 1951, graduated from
Coleman High School in 1970, attended
Abilene Commercial College, served in the
Coleman Unit of the National Guard for six
years, married Judy Ann Wright from Santa
Anna in September 1973. They have
three children; Aimee Lynn, Randall Alfred
and James Doyle, and now live in Hobbs.
(3) Donna Denise,
June, 1953, graduated from Coleman High
School in 1971, and from Angelo State
University in 1975, married Rodney Lynn
Bailey from San Angelo in November
1973. They have two children,
Rebecca Racquet and Christopher Doyle, and
now live in Snyder.
(4) Tena Diane,
September 1958, graduated from Coleman
High School in 1977, attended San Angelo
University, married Terry Lynn Nabors of
DeLeon in May 1980. They have a son,
Michael Clynt, and now live in San Angelo.
Alfred, Sammie
and their four children moved to Coleman
from Colorado City in December, 1958.
Alfred was employed by the Department of
Public Safety of Texas as a Highway
Patrolman. He served Coleman County
in this capacity from 1958-1976.
During these years, Sammie was employed by
the J. C. Penney Co. for two years, C. R.
Anthony for two years, and Bowen Drug
Store as a cosmetologist for nine
years. In 1976, Alfred was
transferred to Abilene, where he was a
trooper assigned to the main office.
He retired from the D. P. S. in December
1981. Alfred and Sammie then moved
back to Coleman, where they had kept their
home.
Alfred went to
work as a car parts salesman at Coleman
Automotive. Sammie started work at
Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital, where
she is still employed. Alfred left
the automotive shop when he was appointed
temporary Municipal Judge in September
1982, filling in for Judge R. C.
Straughan, who retired, due to poor
health, in January 1983, and Alfred filled
his unexpired term. He was appointed
Municipal Judge of Coleman in April, 1983,
and is currently serving in that capacity.
Al and Sammie
joined the First Baptist Church of Coleman
in 1959. Al serves as a deacon and
both are members of the choir. Al is
a member of the Evening Lions Club,
serving as president at this time.
