Public Safety Feb., 1861, and ordered to seize
northwestern frontier posts;
elected colonel Texas Mounted Regiment April,
1861; entered Confederate
service and rose to rank of brigadier-general.
COLONEL JAMES M. NORRIS — Born in
South Carolina in 1820; came
to Texas in 1840; practicing lawyer at
Gatesyule in 1858; delegate to the
Secession Convention 1861; member of the
Committee on Public Safety; appointed
colonel of Texas Mounted Regiment by Governor
Lubbock in 1862.
COLONEL J. E. McCORD — Born in
Abbeyville, South Carolina, July
4, 1834; moved to Texas in 1853; merchant at
Prairie Lea; close friend
of H. E. McCulloch, who urged him as a
delegate to the Secession Convention;
appointed major in Norris Regiment 1862;
advanced to lieutenant-colonel;
appointed colonel to state troops in 1863;
transferred to Confederate service
in 1864; surveyed lands in Coleman County
prior to war and returned to
the county in 1879; engaged in ranching and
banking.
LIEUTENANT-COLONEL JAMES BUCKNER BARRY
— Born in North Carolina
Dec. 16, 1821; came to Texas in 1845; enlisted
in Texas Ranger Battalion
in Mexican War; settled in Navarro County in
1849; served county as sheriff;
moved to Bosque county in 1856; lieutenant
frontier company 1861; promoted
to captain Feb. 25, 1861; major Norris
Regiment 1862; Lt.-Col. McCord’s
Regiment 1863; commander Confederate Frontier
Battalion 1864 to end of
the war.

THOMAS C. FROST — Born in Alabama
1834; came to Comanche, Texas,
1856; first lawyer in the county; lieutenant
of militia 1858; delegate
to Secession Convention 1861; appointed
captain Feb. 25, 1861, and commander
at Camp Colorado; lieutenant-colonel
McCulloch’s Regiment April, 1861;
entered Confederate service as colonel; moved
to San Antonio after the
Civil War and engaged in mercantile business
and in banking.

the war; returned to Coleman 1880 and founded
the “Coleman Voice.”

FRANK M. CROSS — Born in Mississippi
in 1834; came to Milam County
in 1846; settled at Cora, in Comanche County,
in 1856; enlisted in Captain
Collier’s company, Norris Regiment, 1862;
enlisted in Co. I 1863; elected
2nd Lt. Co. B, March, 1864; resided in
Comanche and Brown counties after
the war; his “Early Days in Central Texas” has
become a classic.
JAMES D. MULKEY — Born in eastern
Oklahoma; emigrated to San
Saba in 1857; noted Indian fighter before and
after the Civil War; elected
