  The Banister Cemetery is located on land now owned by Jesse Whitfield.

 John Banister came to Foard County in 1888 and gave five acres of land for the Cemetery. In 1998, Helen Whitfield, Jo, and Faye made a written and photo record of the graves.The only history and records found of this Cemetery were in this record, obituaries from the Foard County news, and the book THEY LOVED THE LAND.

The Banister Cemetery was designated as a Texas Historical Cemetery in 2009.  It is in sad shape but is being redeemed. 

The earliest known grave is 1887 and the last was in 1908.

Adams, Cordelia August 22, 1877 – May 23, 1892

Daughter of J J and E M Adams

Cordelia, the daughter of John James and Elizabeth Mary Cochrain Adams, was 14 years, 9 months and 1 day old when she died. 

John and Elizabeth Adams were in Whitesboro, Grayson County, Texas, at the 1870 recording of the federal census.  They had two little daughters at that time: Isabella, age 6 and Laura, age 2.  Civil War records show that John J. Adams served as a Corporal of 22^nd Texas Cavalry, CSA, Company H.  John and Elizabeth Adams married at Whitesboro, Grayson County, Texas, on September 13, 1860. 

It is not known just when the Adams family made their way to the Banister Community of Hardeman/Foard County or when they left.

 

Clifford, Infant Son born and died January 21, 1899

Clifford, Laura L born May 19, 1897 and died January 30, 1900

Clifford, Lillie D born March 17, 1896 and died November 20, 1906

          These Clifford children were all children of Nara M. and Orah Williams Clifford.  They were in Foard County for the 1900 census at which time both Lillie and Laura were both enumerated in their household.  It also indicated that Nara and Orah were the parents of three children with one having died.   

          At some time before 1920 the Clifford family moved to Alpine, Brewster County, Texas.  They had added Elbert J born about 1901, Ethel K born about 1904 and Nara M, Jr. born about 1909.  They remained in Brewster County where Nara M died July 5, 1947 and Orah died May 16, 1947.  Texas Death Index indicates that their son, Nara M, Jr. died in Wichita County, Texas, on June 20, 1947. 

 

Doolen, Iva Eunice born February 4, 1896 and died May 11, 1897.

Doolen, James Madison born January 20, 1841 and died  February 10, 1908

Doolen, Maggie F birthdate unknown, died June 16, 1886

Doolen, Sallie born October 9, 1824 and died July 3, 1891

          This Doolen family were all inter-related. They came from Marion County, Illinois and were in Texas by Iva Eunice was the granddaughter of James Madison and Margaret F Doolen.  She was the daughter of their first son John William Doolen and his wife.  James M and wife, Margaret (Maggie) F. are beside one another in the cemetery. Maggie may be the first person interred there and it appears that James Madison may have been the last.  James Madison was a civil war veteran, having served with the 20^th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted), Mallory´s Regiment, Company H.  He married Margaret F about 1863 when she was 22 years old. 

          Sallie Foster Doolen and her husband, William, were the parents of James Madison and his siblings; Elizabeth, Rachel, Alfred Harmon, Mary, Jessie Hardy, Nancy Elizabeth, and Wesley F. Sallie’s husband William died about 1865.  They may have still been in Navarro County, Texas, at that time. 

          The Doolen family moved to Quanah, Hardeman County, Texas.  They were there for the 1900 census. 

 

Ferguson, Sterling P born January 23, 1862 and died January 20, 1890

From Barry County, Missouri

          Sterling was the son of F W and Mary A Ferguson.  He was a brother-in-law of John David Standlee, who had married Chole Emily Ferguson.  Sterling and his parents were farming in Salisbury, Chariton County, Missouri during the 1880 census. Sterling P Ferguson married Oma M Doolen on April 3, 1887 in Hardeman County, Texas.  After Sterling P died in January 1890, she then  married George H Show on November 5, 1890.

 

Hartman, Thomas M born June 14, 1891 and died August 16, 1891

          Thomas M was the infant son of William S and Emily L Dunn Hartman.  William and Emily were in Kaufman County, Texas in the 1880 census.  At ages 32 and 26 respectively, their family consisted of Annie B age 9, Bettie S age 7, Eva age 5 and William age 1. 

By the 1900, JP 1, Tarrant County census, William was 50 and Emily 46.  They had Clint age 14 and Mary age 7 still in their household.  They were enlisted in the 1910  Forest Hill, Tarrant County census with William age 32 and Sam Hartman age 26.  Clint and his wife, Gertrude, and his sister, Mary, were next door.  In 1920, Mary Louise Hartman was living with a sister, Eva T McNatt, in Fort Worth, Texas.  Annie Brooks Hartman died at Margaret, Texas, in 1936. She may be buried in the Margaret Cemetery.

 

Moore, Mattie Lee born December 12, 1890 and died November 26, 1891

          Nothing is certain concerning the parentage of infant Mattie Lee Moore; however, Charles M and Lula F were in that area in 1900 when the census was taken for JP 1 (Margaret area), Foard County, Texas.  They remained in the area through the 1910 census.  There was room for Mattie to have been born between sons, Harry K born July 1889 and Willie F born October 1892.   

 

Standlee, Cora born July 3, 1888 and died August 6, 1897.

          Cora was the daughter of William Price and Eliza Ann Stutman Standlee.  She was 9 years old when she died.  Cora was a first cousin to the other Standlee girls buried in the Banister Cemetery. 

Standlee, Francis born August 31, 1894 and died December 9, 1894

Standlee, Ulah born July 4, 1887 and died October 6, 1887

          These two Standlee infants were the children of John David and Chloe Emily Ferguson Standlee.  John David and brother, William Price, were sons of Andrew Jackson Standlee and Mary Jane Walker Standlee whose children were mostly born in Barry County, Missouri.  John David and Chloe Emily were married February 13, 1878.  They were found in the 1880 Cooke County census under the transcribed name of Standler.  They owned property in Wilbarger and Foard Counties. 

 

Wells, Alma Ward born July 15, 1890 and died December 28, 1891

Wells, Mary Lillian born July 17, 1893 and died October 21, 1897

Wells, Meroney Lee born May 7, 1895 and died February 8, 1897

          These baby girls were probably the children of Robert and Mary Wells who were in the Margaret area of Foard County at the 1900 census.

They had been married 19 years and were the parents of 8 children of which only 4 had survived.  They were living next door to John Banister, the donor of the cemetery. Robert and Mary still lived in Foard County in 1920, but moved toDalhart, Dallam County before the 1930 census. 

 

Zeibig, Little Roy born March 7, 1888 and died December 14, 1889

          Robert Roy was the son of F. Robert and T. Lizzie (Eliza) Lott Zeibig. They married November 8, 1885 in Hardeman County, Texas.
