Samuel E. Adams

Athens Weekly Review Thursday, January 18, 1923 Memorial Since God, in His wise providence has seen fit to call our beloved friend, Samuel E. Adams from his earthly home, to that home above, not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens, to receive his rich reward. His life was an exemplification of a true christian, he was self denying, and self sacrificing for the benefit of others. He was sincere, true and steadfast in his friendship-ever kind, hospitable, amiable and generous. He spake no evil of anyone, and his hands and heart were ever ready to do a good act to others. In early life he joined the Methodist church to which faith he was a true believer. His kind and gentle bearing disarmed enmity; none knew him but to love him. He died leaving no unkind feeling of anyone towards himself. He lived to be eighteen years old, October 19, 1922, coming to his grave at an early age like an unripened sheaf of corn in its season. Amid the grief of the beloved relatives and friends, his pure spirit winged its flights to the realm where there is no more sorrow, pain or sin and no more death. By the fountain of living waters and under the shade of the tree of eternal life may his soul rest forever. A FRIEND

Roy L. Bosson

Roy L. Bosson, age 88, retired national trade organization executive, former Arkansas and Idaho newspaperman, and patriarch of a large and loving family, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the Trinity Mother Francis Hospital in Tyler. A direct descendant of a French Huguenot family which migrated to America in 1629, Mr. Bosson was born in White County, Tenn., on Sept. 15, 1911. His family later moved to Hot Springs, Ark., where Roy spent his formative years. In 1930, Mr. Bosson began a 24-year journalistic career as a sports writer and police reporter for the New Era and Sentinel Record in Hot Springs, Ark., (his starting salary was $7 per week). During World War II, Roy enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a proud member of the Warren Townsend Post No. 1, American Legion of Little Rock, Ark. After the war, Mr. Bosson joined the Twin Falls, Times-News (Idaho) as editor and writer. He subsequently returned to Arkansas as a political writer and columnist for the Arkansas Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and, at various times, was a member of the New York City Chapter, the National Chapter of Washington D.C., and the Mid-South Chapter of Memphis, Tenn. Following retirement from the Brewers Association, Mr. Bosson returned to Arkansas where, in semi-retirement at Hot Springs Village, he served as president, executive director and consultant to the Wholesale Beer Distributors of Arkansas. In this capacity, Roy was instrumental in the organization of a national association of wholesale beer distributor executives. Active in church affairs and a staunch believer in the power of prayer, Mr. Bosson's life saw him as the first president and part-time teacher of the Fisherman's Class of the Pulaski Heights Methodist Church of Little Rock, Ark.; charter member of First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs; and charter member and senior warden of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hot Springs Village, Ark. Mr. Bosson gave graciously of his time and believed strongly in volunteerism. Among his many public service accomplishments, the one closest to his heart was his ability to launch a multi-million dollar building program to rebuild derelict school rooms for the Arkansas School for the Blind and Deaf. He did this as chairman of the school's Board of Trustees. Mr. Bosson moved to Athens in 1992 to be closer to his family. He could frequently be seen strutting around the Cain Center in the early morning hours with his walking partner and good buddy, Muffin. The family will receive friends at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home Saturday morning from 10-11 o'clock. Graveside services will be held for family and close friends at the Athens City Cemetery at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Kevin Baum, Danny Baum, Jeb Baum and Ricky Bosson. At 4p.m., Memorial Eucharist services will be held at St. Mathais Episcopal Church in Athens. Memorials or donations should be sent to the place where Roy found his walking partner - the Henderson County Humane Society, or to St. Mathais Episcopal Church of Athens. Mrs. L. A. Campbell

Athens Weekly Review Thursday May 21, 1931 Aged Lady Is Fatally Injured By Motor Mrs. L. A. Campbell, age 71, residing in West Athens, was fatally injured Tuesday morning when struck by a south bound motor car on the Cotton Belt route. The accident occured shortly after 8:00 o'clock about a quarter of a mile west of the Grammer school underpass at a pedestrian crossing. The aged lady received a fractured skull and her arm was badly managled. She was also injured internally died at 6:00 o'clock Wednesday morning. The driver of the motor car did not see Mrs. Campbell and officers were unable to say whether she was struck by the motor car or a north bound train. The motor man stopped about a half mile below the accident to inform a section gang that he thought he saw someone lying by the track and to investigate. P. B. Whitehead, extra gang foreman and several of his men went back to make the investigation. He informed Mrs. Tapscott and Mrs. Rogers, residing near the scene of the accident and they went with him to investigate. Mrs. Tapscott reported that they found Mrs. Campbell lying face downard in the ditch beside the track. She was bleeding profusely and was unconscious. Pysicians were hurriedly summoned and she was removed to the office of Dr. Hodge where her wounds were given attention. Not certain as to whether Mrs. Campbell was struck by the motor car or a north bound train Sheriff Baker phoned the police department at Waco to inspect the front of the motor car for traces of blood. Officers there reported that it had been raining steadily for two hours and it was doubtful if blood stains could be found on the car. Mrs. Rogers, who lives near the scene of the accident reported that she saw Mrs. Campbell passing shortly before the accident occurred. She was evidently struck by the motor car as another train could not have had tme to pass before the motor reached that point. Roy Campbell, son of the injured woman, stated that his mother was on her way to town. The crossing is one used only by pedestrians and the people of the west end use it because it is a nearer route to town. Vehicles formerly used the crossing but it was abandoned when the road bed was raised. Funeral services will be held at the family home in West Athens at 4:00 o'clock this afternoon by Rev. C. W. Young. Burial will be at the city cemetery. Mrs. Campbell was born in Henderson county January 20, 1860 and had resided in the county all her life. She was a member of the Baptist Church, having joined that denomination early in life. Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, Roy and Jim of Athens, four daughters, Mrs. W. V. Emma Dennis Carroll

Athens Weekly Review April 26, 1901 Another Pioneer Gone. Died- At the residence of her son, E. A. Carroll in Athens, Sunday the 21st inst. at one o'clock in the morning Mrs. Emma D. Carroll. She was sixty-six years in December, last. Mrs. Carroll's maiden name was Butcher. she was born in Kentucky, December 15, 1834. Her Mother who was then a widow removed from Kentucky to Arkansas and in 1844 removed to Lamar county, Texas and from there to Henderson county Texas in 1848 before Athens was founded, Old Buffalo then being the county seat. She has resided since then near and in Athens until her death. In 1852 she was married to Mr. E. A. Carroll, who was from North Carolina. Her husband died in 1880. She has had eight children, four sons and four daughters. Two sons and tow daughters survive her, W. T. Carroll county clerk, E. A. Carroll, of the firm Miller, Carroll & Spencer, Mrs. C. F. Scott and Mrs. Maggie Spencer. It is a singular circumstance that before her death, the father, two sons and two daughters had died the mother, two sons and two daughters were living. She was a niece of Rev. W. B. Stirman of this county. She was a devoted and faithful member of the Christian church, loved her religion and her God zealously. She lived in Texas when it was a Republic and has seen it pass all the political revolutions it has experienced. Mrs. Carroll had suffered all the privations, hardships and dangers incident to pioneer life. She was so accustomed to dangers in her early life from wild indians and savage beasts that she knew no such feeling as fear. Notwithstanding her early life was spent in a frontier country, yet she was a woman of vast information and her reading in history and current events was extensive. She was perfectly familiar with English history and when Edward VII came to the throne she could give the genealogy of his house. She was known and loved by all for her kind and gentle treatment of everybody. She was on of those grand women who are the mothers of the country and the honorable character and usefulness of her children show she was a true mother and one whose children make the best men and women of the country. She has suffered for years with spells of asthma, but none thought of her end being so near. She was sick less than a week. She, as her habit nearly every Sunday, visited the grave yard the Sunday before she died. It was a fitting thing that her burial occurred on Sunday. The services were held at the cemetery, conducted by Rev. L. D. Anderson, pastor of the Christian church. A landmark has gone, a good woman has departed, a faithful Christian has joined the band on the other side, a wise and loving mother is taken from her children. She leaves them a shining example of one faithful to every trust and station in life. The REVIEW with her host of friends extends condolences to the bereaved.
