Athens Weekly Review Thursday January 12, 1956 Loss Dowell Dies; Funeral Services Friday Afternoon James Lawson (Loss) Dowell, a well-known resident of Athens died in a local hospital Wednesday 10:30 p.m. following a very brief illness. He was 71 years of age. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Marvin Johnson and the Rev. Wilson Carwile at 2 p.m. Friday from the West Athens Baptist Church and interment was in the Athens City Cemetery. Hassell and Foster Funeral Home of Athens was in chrage of arrangements. Born in Van Zandt County, Mr. Dowell had been a resident of Athens since he was a small boy. He was a returied contractor and a member of the West Athens Baptist Church. At one time, he served the church as a deacon. Mr. Dowell and his wife, Mattie, observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary Austust 20, 1951. They were married in Athens and Mrs. Dowell was the former Miss Mattie Callaway of Stockard. Survivors include his wife, a son Alvin Dowell of Athens; a foster son Beauford Callaway of Los Alamos, New Mexico; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Long of Athens; two brothers, Wash Dowell of Mabank and Lonnie Dowell of Athens; a sister MRs. Addie Shelton of Athens, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
