DAN J. PAYNE
----------

At 12:40 Friday morning, December 18th at the Scott & White Sanitarium in Temple, death came and claimed the spirit of Dan J. Payne. He was born in Payne Springs on October 26th 1871, thus reaching the age of 60 years, 1 month and 22 days.

Dan Payne was united in marriage to Miss Alice Williamson on August 8, 1897 and to this union were born three children a daughter and two sons. The daughter died in infancy, the elder son passed away at the age of 16 years. The deceased is survived by his wife and younger son, Dan, Jr. One sister, Miss Lilia Payne of Malakoff and one brother, Jeff Payne of San Angelo.

Mr. Payne, in early life was agent for the Cotton belt Rail road at Athens, serving in this position for 15 years. He also served as cashier for the Cotton Belt at Tyler for a number of years. Later he moved with his family to Hamlin, Texas where he engaged in the mercantile business. During which time he acquired considerable property. He was a member of the Christian Church, served as deacon and taking an active part in the church work. He was a member of the Masonic Order and the K. of P. Lodge.

Dan Payne was truly a sefmade man. His father and mother both having passed away while he was but a small boy. Of the jovial spirit and always a friendly greeting for those he cane in contact, he won many friends wherever he went. He was always ready to help the needy and was interested in all things that pertained to the upbuilding and the betterment of his town and community.

He remains were laid to rest in East cemetery in Hamlin. Services were conducted by the Re. T. C. Willet, pastor of the First Methodist Church of that city. How the deceased was loved and respected was shown by the many and beautiful floral offerings and the unusually large concourse that followed his remains to their last resting place.

The writer having known Mr. Payne most of his like, knew him to be one of the best and his loss will be felt in his town and community. Top his broken hearted wife and son, and to his sister and brother, we shall say, "There is no death, the stars go down to rise upon a fairer shore." -- A Friend.
