Irene Kealoha Kamauoha Makekau Rushing


    Services for Irene Kealoha Kamauoha Makekau Rushing, 71, of Athens
are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints, 814 Belmont, in Athens, with Bishop Stanley Green officiating.

    Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery in Henderson County under the
direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.

    Mrs. Rushing died Friday, Oct.9,1998, in Athens following a lengthy
fight with cancer.

    She was born May 22, 1927, in Napoopo, South Kona, Hawaii, to Henry
and Matila Makekau Duvachelle. She and her husband had lived in Lamesa,
where they raised their seven daughters. They owned and operated Irene's
Truck Stop Cafe for 17 years before retiring to Athens in the spring of 1985.
She was a  member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of
Athens, where she was active in serving the Lord until her health prevented
her from attending.

    Mrs. Rushing is survived by her husband of 51 years, Simpson "Simp"
Matthew Rushing of Athens, daughters, Lani Gilbreath of Honolulu, Hawaii,
Gloria Sellers of Athens, Kathy Reeves and her husband, Earl, and Paula
Ambriz and her husband, Perfecto, all of Lamesa, Lehua Kanae and her
husband, Tu'uta Tu'akalau, Laurie and Darvy Payne and Charmayne Rushing,
all of Athens; brothers, William Messer of Las Vegas, Nev., and Hauola Prim
of Kauai, Hawaii; sister, Kalehua Pule of Kona, Hawaii; 24 grandchildren;
and five great-grandchildren.

    Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Gary Sellers, George Sellers, Jason Reeves,
Colby Reeves, Curtis Walton, Jeffery Payne, Steven Lopez and Simpson Rushing II.
    Viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints in Athens.

    Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the
American Diabetes Foundation.
