Bethel Boy Killed By Auto Wednesday
----------

Robert Earl, the ten year old son of Mrs. Jennie Skinner of the Bethel Community, north of Athens, was killed almost instantly last Wednesday afternoon by and automobile driven by Evangelist T. W. Preston, who is conducting a revival meeting at the Methodist Church at Athens.

The accident occurred about 4:30 p.m. as the child was returning home from the Bethel school. The little fellow was going along the highway rolling an iron hoop and was about 100 yards ahead of the car when the minister first sounded his horn and turned out to pass him. The child suddenly darted in front of the machine and the driver made a frantic turn in the opposite direction in order to pass him safely but the boy, apparently sensing his danger for the first time ran in front of the car again. He was knocked down and fell under the car just as the wheels on one side slid into a ditch. The chassis of the machine pinned the child to the ground horribly crushing the body. Death came almost instantly.

Mrs. Jennie Skinner, widowed mother of the child stated that the boy was partially deaf, which no doubt was responsible for his failure to heed the first warning and resulted in his tragic death.

Funeral services were held at the Shelby Chapel at 3:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon. Interment took place in the cemetery adjoining the Chapel.
