Cleburne, July 28, -- Yesterday about 10 a.m. in the Ham Creek neighborhood, three miles from here, John Birge shot and killed E. V. Taylor. The two men had cherished a grudge against each other for some time, and were known to have been carrying weapons with deadly intent.
The Meeting.
Yesterday they met at the point named, Taylor in a wagon, armed with a shotgun, and Birge on horseback, also with a shotgun. From the statement of Birge it appears that Taylor opened fire. At any rate there were several shots fired on both sides, with the fatal result stated. Taylor lived a few hours only.
Birge came to town and gave himself up. He is now in jail awaiting a preliminary hearing.
Both men are said to have been good citizens.
