George Washington Lee

Mitchell County News July 26, 1934


Funeral rites were held at three o'clock Monday afternoon for G. W. (Uncle Tobe)Lee, 74 whose death occurred Sunday morning at his farm home near Bauman.
The funeral service was conducted by Reverend H. N. Baldree, pastor of the Bethel Church, assisted by Reverend W. D. Green of Sylvester and Reverend A. C. Hardin of Loraine, both former pastors.
Mr. Lee was born in Kentucky December 25, 1859, and passed away July 22,1934. He was married to Miss. Mollie Mills October 13, 1878, near Dallas, Texas. To this union was born the following children, all of whom are living near Loraine; Edward Franklin Lee, Charles Lafayette Lee, James William Lee, Jesse Columbus Lee, and George Olan Lee. Besides his wife and children he is survived by 29 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Lee was a pioneer citizen of Mitchell County having moved here in December 1897.
He was a member of the Baptist Church at Bethel and was a faithful Christian from the time of his conversion until his death.
Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Boss Mann and Mrs. Julia Quinn of Ackerly, Mrs. Lee Box of Stamford, Mr. and Mrs. Davis and daughter of Sonora, and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Garrett and daughter of McCamey.
Pallbearers were Ben Wiggins, Dee McCollum, Clifton Henderson, Les Collier, Floyd Thomas and Luke Finley. Flower girls were his granddaughters.
Internment was made in the Loraine Cemetery under the direction of G. W. Hendrick of the Loraine Undertaking Company.
The esteem in which Mr. Lee was held in the community was shown by the large concourse of friends who accompanied the body to the cemetery.
