Liberty Hill Cemetery
Home

Liberty Hill Cemetery is located in the rural, Northeast part of Titus County at the Liberty Hill Missionary Baptist Church. This is one of the largest rural cemeteries in the county. A chain link fence surrounds the cemetery and the grounds maintenance is very well done. As with most of the Titus County Cemeteries, this one depends upon the donations of friends and relatives of those interred here. In line with that Decoration Day services are held annually at 10:00 AM on the 4th Saturday of April to honor those that have gone before by placing flowers and ornaments on the graves and socializing with a covered dish luncheon. A special effort is made to receive donations that day.

Not much history was found on the beginnings of the cemetery but on October 22, 1879, Samuel J. Wright deeded the original two acres of land to Archabald Cameron, E. J. Johnson and William Griffin for the sum of $4.00 to be used for the exclusive use of School, Church and cemetery. Other parcels were deeded by different people later.

A program was instituted some time ago where known grave sites without markers were marked with small flat concrete slabs. As a consequence, there are currently 214 of these markers remaining. Other grave sites are marked by 2 concrete foundation blocks, 2 regular concrete building blocks, 8 funeral home markers (FHM), 17 chunks of petrified wood, a granite block , a small ceramic cross, 7 concrete slabs measuring roughly 6"x6"x18", an FHM that only had “Diana” written on it, 3 native stones, a broken clay pot, a concrete slab that has “Miller” written over “Charlton” on it, a monument base with the monument missing, and 1 granite slab.

To reach the Liberty Hill Cemetery from the Titus County court house take Jefferson Street north for 1.4 miles to the intersection with Burton Road (service road for IH-30). Turn right (East) onto Burton Road. The on ramp for Interstate 30 will be on the left 0.2 mile from the intersection. Enter IH-30 and proceed 2.9 miles east and take the Exit 165 FM 1001 off ramp. At the stop sign, turn left (North) onto FM 1001. Proceed 2.9 miles on FM 1001 and the cemetery will lie on the right side of the road at the intersection of County Road (CR) 3825 (CR NE 24).
