Roper-Panther Cemetery
Home

In the past, there has been controversy over whether the proper name for this cemetery is “Roper” or “Panther”. The surveyor wishes to avoid this controversy but will use the shorter name “Roper” for the purpose of this research. The cemetery lies in the Southeast part of Titus county but very close to the center. This is a medium sized public cemetery located about 3 miles South of MP and about 0.3 mile West of FM Highway 127 on private lands owned presently by Frank Glover. It is fenced covering about an acre with numerous fallen limbs, underbrush and briars surrounding the grave sites. Buried in this cemetery are Grigsbys, Fitzgeralds, Perkins, Smiths, Johnsons and others. Lynch Harper in his “Cemeteries of Titus County” presents an interesting genealogy of some of those interred here but there seems to be a paucity of historical facts found for the cemetery.

Recently, someone has erected PVC pipe markers throughout the cemetery to assist in grave site locations. A compilation of these grave markers follows: There were 4 PVC pipes only, 2 PVC pipe and brick, 2 PVC pipe and petrified wood, 1 PVC pipe and a Funeral Home Marker (FHM), 2 pieces of petrified wood, 3 FHM, 3 native rocks, and a brick bordered grave.

To reach the Roper Cemetery from the Titus County court house, take West 1st Street (west) 0.5 miles to the intersection of Ferguson Road (Business US 271). Proceed through the intersection to O’Tyson Street (FM 127) then 2.8 miles south on FM 127 to a private drive way on the right side of the road. The cemetery lies about 0.3 miles to the west of the present entrance and behind the Glover barn.   Coordinates: 33o07.836'N 095o00.633'W
