Russell Cemetery
Home

The Russell Cemetery is one of the many abandoned cemeteries located in rural Southeast Titus County. It is located on lands owned by Mr. Ira Bicknell in the William Welch survey. Mr. Bicknell proved to be a valuable source of historical information, a true asset for the county that should be exploited. George Fletcher Russell, a relative of Mrs. Bicknell, started the cemetery prior to the Civil War, and there is evidence of graves covering a considerable area indicating that it is a large cemetery. Although it lies in the woods on the Bicknell property, there is little underbrush and easily accessible. Presently there are only two monuments for two brothers by the name of Short, who Mr. Bicknell tells me, that came home from the Civil War and eventually killed each other over the affections of a local lady. Mr. Bicknell also related the story of two other monuments that were removed by some man and transported to the nearby Springhill SE cemetery, but were never placed and finally disappeared and no one knows what happened to them. The broken monument described in the write-up of the Springhill SE cemetery for Mary E. Pitt is thought to be one of them.

To reach the Russell Cemetery from the Titus County court house, take Madison Street south for 0.3 mile to the intersection with Ferguson Road (US 271). Turn left onto Ferguson Road and continue Southeast (the road becomes Texas Highway 49). Proceed 3.8 miles to the intersection of Chapel Hill Road (FM 1735). Turn right onto FM 1735 and continue for 8.4 miles to the intersection with Texas Highway 11. Turn right onto Texas 11 and proceed for 0.1 mile. Currently, this will bring you to the entrance on the left to the estate of the land owner. The home lies about 100 yards south of Texas 11. The cemetery lies 0.5 mile behind the house.
