Joseph Chandler Dean married 16 Jun 1861 in Ala. to Frances Elizabeth Powell (1842-1917) and their children included Annie E. Dean (1858 – 1928), James Lucas Dean (1866 – 1949), Walter Stillwell Dean (1872 – 1933), Mary "Mollie" Dean born about 1875, and Martha "Mattie" Dean (1877 – 1959).  During the Civil War he enlisted in Co. F, 27th Regiment, Alabama Infantry, and was a Sergeant in Co. D, 57th Regiment, Alabama Infantry.  He served with his brother John C. Dean in the same 57th Regiment.

D, 19th Regiment, Texas Infantry.
