- JONES CEMETERY HISTORY
C61
The cedar stump in the center of the Jones Cemetery marks the
grave of a cowboy traveling through the country. It was among
the first graves in the cemetery in the early 1870s when the
cemetery was first started. The community consisted of a church,
a
school, and the public road ran along the north side according
to Mrs. O.J. (Jennie) Joyce who was Jennie Jones before her marriage.
In 1920 when C.H. Stewart, W.F. Stallings and Dee Robinett were
the three Trustees for the cemetery a plot of land was purchased
from
- Bob Gregory and W.F. Stallings out of the
G. Martinez survey as follows. Beginning 343 - 4 vrs. N. 45 W.
and 10 vrs.
- S. 45 W. of the East corner N. 45 W. 76 -
8 vrs. to stake for corner thens N. 45 E. 10 vrs. to stake for
corner Thense S. 45 W. 10 vrs. to
beginning. Deed recorded Nov. 8, 1920. Nov. 6,1954 Dee Robinett
called a meeting of anyone interested in the Jones Cemetery
upkeep and working. New officers were elected as follows: President
Lum McBride, Vice President Dee Robinett, Secretary-
Treas. Irene Johnson. Letters were written to all interested
people for friends to install a cyclone fence around the plot
and on July 18,
1968 the fence was installed by B.R. Wooldridge of Terrell at
a cost of $251.60.
One Confederate Veteran M.M. (Mike) Robinett, born Dec. 26,1842,
died March 23, 1900, 2nd Sgt. Co. H 10 Regiment, Texas
Cavalry, serving in the Confederate army during the Civil War,
is buried here. The Jones Cemetery is located a few miles
north and east of Wills Point, Texas in Van Zandt County. Land
for the cemetery was donated by some early settlers. Listed are
some of the graves found in the cemetery that are marked and
the writing on the markers still legible.
