MAPMAPMAPby Bobby Eugene and Ruth Nell Massey Two towering headstones stand in the center of the Allen Cemetery marking the graves of William J. Allen, who came to Van Zandt County, Texas, from Alabama in 1850, and his wife Elizabeth Jane Allen. Some thirty other headstones are scattered over a quiet peaceful hill surrounded by giant old oak trees. Numerous unmarked graves are evident in this old historical cemetery. Family lore has it that several Negro slaves and an Indian or two are buried there also.
The oldest headstone is of Hiram White, born March 18, 1811, and died October 5, 1867. His wife, Martha D. White, born April 7, 1820, and died February 6, 1875, is buried next to him.
An immigrant from Stockholm, Sweden, Charles E. Goss, found his final resting place in the Allen Cemetery. His third wife, Martha Ann Allen Goss, is also buried in the Allen Cemetery. Joseph Mislivets and wife Mary Jane Allen Mislivets are also buried there. Joseph’s sister, Mary Peknitz who came to America from Czechoslovakia with Joseph Mislivets and other members of the Mislivets family are buried in the Allen Cemetery. At least one Confederate Veteran, James Allen, (and possibly more) and a Veteran of World War I, Samuel R. Massey, are buried in this old Cemetery. Other families buried in this old historical cemetery are Fuller, Massey, Neal, Page, Nolley, and Cady. All are in some related to William J. Allen.
The Allen Cemetery was first known as the White Cemetery since the first burial was of a White. The name was later changed to the Allen Cemetery when the Allen family acquired title to the land. The first official deed for the cemetery was in 1909 when William J. Allen deeded one and one-fifth acres (the burial plot) to John R. Allen, Edd Nolley and Erwin Page, Trustees of the Cemetery. In 1957 a fence was built around the Cemetery from donations from families interested in the Cemetery. The last burial in this Cemetery was in 1959. The Cemetery is located South of Wills Point, Texas approximately one mile off VZ County Road 3407.
