- Sinia Elizabeth "Lizzie" Stovall
Steele was born April 29,1836 in Lincoln County ,Tennessee to
James A and Marrian Stovall. At the age of 25 she was living
in Coffadeliah, Neshoba County, Mississippi.
In 1861 she received a letter from Sewel
Steele of the 5th Mississippi Infantry stationed at Marion
Mississippi. Sewel apologized to "Lizzie" for not having
been formally introduced. But Sewel was a lonely soldier from
Neshoba County and had no one to communicate with since he had
come to Mississippi from Jefferson County , New York. Incidentally,
Sewel's brother Fredrick was a member of the Union army. The
correspondence continued throughout the Civil War. After the
war Sewel came back to Neshoba County and he and Lizzie were
married on December 31,1865. They had two daughters born in Neshoba
County- Lula Belle in 1866 and Mattie Williams Steele in 1867.
Sewel and Lizzie came to Van Zandt County in 1870. Sewel died
in 1876 and is buried in the Edom Cemetery.
After Sewels death Lizzie married J. W. Williams in 1877and they
had one son, Albert born in 1879.
- J. W. died in 1894 and is buried in the Edom
cemetery.
Lizzie died in September 1919 and is buried next to Sewel in
the old section of the Edom cemetery.
