TOOMBES-VENIBLE
CEMETERY
The narrative for this cemetery was taken from Book 4 of Van Zandt County Texas Cemeteries with permission from Lavona Blackwell. The narrative and survey was offered by James H. Barnhart and Harold Johnson and is considered complete. About .5 mile on the right 100 feet off the road you will see a tremendous patch of blackberry briars, some eight feet high. The cemetery is unfenced and buried within this jungle. The oldest grave said to be here is that of Nancy Ann Joines (b. 7 Nov 1828; d. 13 Aug 1898) wife of D. L. Joines.
A more recent survey conducted by Paul Ridenour has been used to update the information previously transcribed. This recent survey was conducted in early 2000 and the directions to the cemetery have been updated as well.
To get to the Toumbes-Venable Cemetery, take State Hwy. 19 north from U.S. Hwy. 80. Go approximately 1 mile and turn right on VZCR 3613. drive exactly 1/2 mile and park your car. The cemetery will be 100 feet from the road on the right. The cemetery is on private property owned by Ben Henderson. There is a chain link fence that is 5' high and 10' wide and 20' long. Thanks to Mr. Henderson, the blackberries have been cleared away and the cemetery can be surveyed. It is strongly recommended that Mr. Henderson be contacted before visiting this cemetery.
