The McFarlands are a combination of Scotch and French blood, the streams of those two lines of life having been joined in old Virginia some generations past. Augustus McFarland was born, lived and died in old Virginia and was a doctor. He was the grandfather of our subject. His father also was reared in Virginia, was a farmer and surveyor, and E. J. was the one child of the union, and he was born in Virginia November 8, 1856. He was educated there, lacking only a short time of graduation. He is a merchant and has been merchandising in Edgewood since 1890. In 1882 he married Miss N. B. Clark, in Wanaker, Virginia. They have one son. Mr. McFarland has acquired a goodly amount of Van Zandt real estate, and thinks it has a great future. Almost anything desirable can be raised, and good yields can be obtained in every crop. He is a member of the church, and an I.O.O.F., and is one of the substantial citizens of Edgewood, stands on his integrity and has as many friends as anybody
