The family came from Kentucky, and both his father and his grandfather were dealers in fine stock. John Constant was his father and lived in Hammonsville, KY. In 1876 he married Eliza Hodges; they were the parents of nine children. They came to Texas and both died here, the mother in 1881, the father in 1889. Henry was born July 16, 1866; he was educated in the common schools of Texas; he is strictly a stockman, breeder and dealer in fine horses and mules. He has been in the stock business seventeen years. In due time he married Miss Mertie Smith, and they have five boys and one girl. He came from Kaufman county to Van Zandt eighteen years ago and came from Kentucky to Texas in 1876. He is a Baptist, Mason and an Odd Fellow. He is small of stature but every inch a gentleman, and is full of nerve and pluck as an egg is of meat; few men are doing more for the material uplift of Van Zandt county than Henry Constant. He puts himself and his business before the world in a legitimate, but active and confident way, and it is paying him, as his business is already good, but growing with every passing season.
