Lee Broaddus, Kind, Jovial, Passes Away
Frail Little Man of Almost Eighty Years Laid To Rest In Masonic Cemetery
Henry Lee Broaddus, kind, jovial, little man who knew no other home than Caldwell where he was born and spent an entire lifetime of useful work, love and spiritual activity, has passed away. During the last five or six years Mr. Lee had suffered one hard heart attack after another and on many occasions lay in a coma for day, but somehow, miraculously, he would rally, sit up in bed with a clear mind and smilingly crack a joke with his loved ones who were near-by or to the preacher who had thought this frail man of almost eighty years was about to draw his last breath. Or he would joke with his family physician, who could not understand how he could muster the stamina to come back after he had been so close to death. But, invariably, a few weeks, sometimes even a few days later Lee Broaddus was back downtown, talking to his friends, laughing and ribbing them, not even showing signs of the severe suffering he had so recently undergone.

About two weeks ago Mr. Lee had a bad attack and was rushed to a Bryan hospital and as usual he rallied and began to improve to such an extent that he was brought back to the home where he has lived for more than fifty years, but he gradually grew weaker and weaker until the end came. He had fought a great fight, lived a long, profitable life, reared a wonderful, loving family. He had done a splendid job. Death came at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, November 19, 1949.

Funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church on Sunday at 3 p.m., with Harvey-Schiller in charge. Rev. C. M. White officiated, assisted by Reverends A. S. Broaddus, E. E. Carrington, and Dr. Gordon Watts of Bryan. The choir of the First Baptist Church sang "What a Friend we Have in Jesus", and "Blest Be the Tie that Binds", with Mrs. Guy Douglass at the organ. Seven grandsons of Mr. Broaddus served as pallbearers; Murray J. Broaddus, Billie Broaddus, J. C. Broaddus, Luther Broaddus, Jimmie Broaddus, Jesse and Joe Lee Turner; also Billie Gray and William Allen.

Masonic services were held at the graveside by Warren Lodge No. 56, A.F. & A.M. conducted by Reid Philip, past worshipful master.

Henry Lee Broaddus was born in Caldwell, Texas on January 30, 1870, the son of a pioneer family, the late Mr. and Mrs. Reuben G. Broaddus. He spent his entire lifetime in Caldwell. On June 27, 1894 he was married to Miss Lester Kluken, and this couple observed their Golden Wedding anniversary on June 27, 1844. For many years he was connected with the firm of Herbst & Windhausen, then with T. F. Gilley, and later with Thorton Gro. Co. He held the agency for the Central Freight Lines until his failing health compelled him to retire from active business interests.

Besides his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Annie Lee Turner of Fort Worth, and four sons, Ingram of Brownwood, Johnnie and Murray of Caldwell, and Frank of Chicago; ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nellie Broaddus Gray of this city, and a brother, J.A. Broaddus of Fresno, Calif.

Those attending the funeral of Lee Broaddus from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Broaddus of Brownwood, Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie Broaddus of Shamrock, Frank Broaddus of Chicago, Mrs. Annie Lee Turner, Jesse and Joe Lee of Fort Worth, Wainwright Broaddus and Mr. and Mrs. Don Nagle of Galveston, Dr. and Mrs. Guy Knolle, W. H. Taylor, Joe Broaddus and Miss Lucille Longmire of Houston, Mrs. Fred Primn of Lubbock, Mrs. Howard Calhoun of Lometa, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wondrash of Bellville, Gersham Bedach of Calvert, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh James of Pendleton, Mrs. Logan Mewhinney of Holland, Dr. Pepick and mother of Bartlett, Mr. and Mrs. William Allen and three children of Fort Stockton, Misses Clara Bell and Phronia Carrington of Bryan, Rev E. Death of Joseph W. Farmer
In the presence of twelve of his children and a large number of those whom he had seen grow up from boy and girlhood, the casket that contained all that was mortal of Joseph W. Farmer was reverently lowered to its last resting place in the old cemetery last Sunday morning at 10 o'clock. Though many had known that Mr. Farmer had been in failing health for the past two years, his death was a shock to all, for only the day before the end came he was walking about the home seemingly as usual. Friday about midnight he summoned some of the family, stating that he was ill, and before a physician could be summoned he was dead, the end being without pain - just a stopping of the machinery of life. Joseph W. Farmer was a native of Virginia, and came to Texas with the Broaddus colony, a boy of 16, in 1854, settling in this county. In 1865 he was married to Miss Emma Parkhill, and four children, three boys, Reuben, Lee and Albert and a girl, now Mrs. W.C. Carroll, came to bless their union. His wife died in the late 70's and in 1880, he was married to Miss Lucy Burton, and eight children were born to them, Namely, Clyde, Guy, Jennie, James, Mamie, Elna, Willie and Kate, the latter now 9 years of age. He was again left a widower about six years ago. Mr. Farmer was a tinner by trade, and while he had never amassed any amount of this world's goods, he was a man well liked by all who knew him. He belonged to none of the secret orders, but was and had been for a number of years a consistent member of the Baptist church. All of his children were present at the funeral, as well as an only brother, Andrew Farmer of Waco, now in his 72nd year. But one of the children, Miss Jennie, will remain here, the others going with other married members of the family to other points in the state.

Death of Thomas Farmer
Thomas Farmer, aged 77 years, 1 month and 8 days, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.E. James, Tuesday afternoon, June 27, at 6 o'clock, after having been confined to his bed for about two weeks. His death was due to kidney trouble, though he was suffering first from a spell of billious fever. He had always been hearty and active, and only since he had an attack of la grippe (influenza) in the spring had he shown any signs of ill health.

He was a man who was loved and honored by the whole people, an unassuming, gentle and kindly man, and a sincere Christian, and an attempt to pay tribute to his character would be futile, as all who knew him know that his life stands as a bright example of how close a man can live to the straight and narrow path when he makes an effort. The following items in regard to his life were furnished by Rev. Fullbright, his pastor:

Thomas Farmer was born in Caroline county, Virginia, May 19, 1828; came to Caldwell in 1854; joined the Baptist church when a boy. Was married to Mrs. Mary Smoot in 1855, and to them were born two children, of whom Mrs. G.E. James survives. Mrs. Georgia Lamkin, his step-daughter, and two brothers, A.J. Farmer, of Waco, and J.W. Farmer, of Caldwell, also survive him. He entered the Confederate Army in 1862, serving in Colonel Allen's regiment, Captain Douglass' company, to the end of the war. He had been a resident of Caldwell for the past half century, and his life was a part of the history of the town. He was a deacon of the Caldwell Baptist church for thirty years, a zealous Christian, always at his place in the church services, punctual in the performance of his duties, a man of spotless character whose praise is in every mouth.

The funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, and a large crowd of friends witnessed the last honors paid to one whom all loved, and followed sorrowfully to the old cemetery his remains. His death will leave a blank in many places where he has always been found with a cheery word for everyone, and no one who has gone to rest since Caldwell has been a town will be remembered longer, nor his influence do more for those who have been associated with him. His life's work was well and faithfully done, and he rests now in a happier world, to which he has looked forward with bright anticipations.

One of the saddest and most deplorable deaths to have occurred in Caldwell in several weeks, was the death of Mr. G. E. James, which occurred early Friday morning, May 25, in a Temple sanitarium where he had gone only a few days before for a special medical treatment. Mr. James was ill only a few prior to his death. He was operated upon for a disorder of the stomach with the confident hope of effecting a cure. On account of his serious condition, he grew gradually worse, and early Friday morning succumbed to the malady that gripped him.

Friday afternoon his remains were brought to Caldwell by rail and placed in state in the family home until the following afternoon, when appropriate funeral services were held, following which his body was laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery. Rev. W. O. Wright, pastor of the Baptist church conducted the services. He was assisted by Rev. W. W. Burr, Baptist Missionary Evangelist of Burleson - Lee Counties, and E. E. Carrington, pastor of the Providence Church.

Mr. James was born in the state of Illinois, March 22, 1859. When seventeen years of age, he immigrated to Texas along with his parents and settled in Rockdale, Milam County. One year later he moved with his parents to Burleson County and settled near Caldwell. At maturity he became engaged in the mercantile business and became one of the leading merchants of the county. At the date of his death, he was associated with G. H. Shaw in the electric and plumbing business. For several years he had been closely identified with the business interests of the county and was widely known.

Besides being prominent in business, Mr. James made an enviable record in church denominational affairs. He was a consistent member of the Baptist church of this city and one of its foremost workers and benefactors. For many long years he served the church in numerous capacities. He contributed much of his time to church work. He made a record that few laymen ever attain. For thirty long years he served as trustee. He was superintendent of the Baptist Sunday school of this city twenty-nine years. He was deacon twenty-eight years. He was church clerk twelve years, Sunday school teacher six years and chairman of board of the Deacons eighteen years. In addition to all of this, he was one of the most faithful and competent members of the church choir. He dearly loved church work and the association of the people. He was faithful unto the end, ready and willing at all times to promote its best interests.

Besides being prominent in the business affairs of the county, church affairs, Mr. James was an extremely devoted husband and kind father. He was a true friend to all. It is conceded that the town and county has lost one of its most moral and worthy citizens.

Mr. James is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alma James, three children, Hugh James of Pendleton, Mrs. Wade H. Taylor of Temple, Mrs. Murray F. Broaddus of this city, and four brothers and one sister, Dr. A. J. James, Houston, T.O. James, Des Moines, New Mexico, F.W. James, Bowie, J.W. James, Plainview, and Miss Bertha Mae James, Fort Worth.

The out of town relatives and friends here to attend the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Hugh James and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Taylor, Dr. A.J. James, T.O. James, F.W. James, J.W. James, Miss Bertha Mae James, Lester and Bob James, Mesdames E.F., Edgar and Grady Hutchins, Marlin, Miss Alma Lee Joiner, Wichita Falls, Miss Euphie Lang and Mrs. Alma Gribble, Sommerville, Misses Edna and Rose Cantrell, Pendleton, Messrs. Dillon and Littlefield, Pendleton, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Withers, Bryan, and Mrs. T. F. Bunkley of Temple.

Death of Mrs. W. E. James
Submitted by: Will James

Mrs. Hannah E. James, wife of Rev. W. E. James, died at her home in Bowie, Texas, Tuesday morning, November 22, at 3:30 o'clock, after suffering eight weeks from an attack of asthma. Her suffering was such that for eight weeks she had been sitting in a chair, unable to get in a reclining position, and for some time her suffering had been so intense that death was indeed a relief to the pain-racked body.

Mrs. James was born in Wales, May 1, 1831, hence was 73 years, 6 months and 21 days old at the time of her death. She was married to Rev. W. E. James, August, 8, 1854, and they came to America on their wedding trip, settling first in Hoboker, N.Y. In 1878 they came to Texas and first located in Milam county, moving a year later to Burleson county and occupying their old home near Caldwell until January, 1891, when they moved to Bowie, and have made their home there since. Last August they celebrated at their home the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage.

She was a member of the Baptist church having joined a short time after coming to America, and was a member of the church of England before leaving Wales.

She was the mother of ten children, of whom seven are now living, five sons and two daughters: Mrs. W. T. Coffield, Bowie; G. E. James, Caldwell; Dr. A. J. James, Houston; T. O. James, Guymon, Okla.; F. W. James, Bowie, J. Wade James, Stratford, and Miss Bertha James, Bowie. All were present during the last week of her illness and at the time of her death.

The funeral occurred at Bowie Tuesday afternoon at 5 o'clock, and she was laid to rest surrounded by friends and loved ones who had so recently witnessed the happy reunion and anniversary for the last time.

Mrs. James and her husband are known to nearly every person in Burleson county, and they were loved and honored by all, and the sympathy of the entire county will be extended to the aged husband in this affliction, and to the children in the death of a devoted mother. She was a consistent Christian and lived such a life as will well merit the "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" in the happy future to which she looked forward with hope and pleasure, and the reunion that will occur there between husband and wife will be beyond all sorrow and parting.

Rev. W. E. James died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Coffield, in Bowie Texas, on the 17th instant.

Brother James was well and familiarly known to the people of Burleson county, with whom he lived and spent many of the best years of his life. He was 75 years old at the time of his death. He was a native of Wales, where he grew to manhood, and married his wife, who died only a few months ago. Immediately after their marriage they sailed for the United States. The resided in the northwestern states of the union for many years, and about 1877 removed to Texas, and settled near Rockdale. He was called to the pastorate of the First Baptist church of Caldwell in 1878, and spent most of that year in Caldwell, his family remaining near Rockdale, until the fall of that year, when they removed to the vicinity of Caldwell and settled on a farm which he purchased about that time a few miles below town and where they resided up to the time he left Caldwell. He was pastor of the First Baptist church of Caldwell from 1878 to 1883, when he resigned. He was again called to the pastorate of the same church about 1888, and resigned again in 1893. He was converted and joined the Baptist church in Wales and soon afterwards became a minister and was actively engaged in the ministry up to the time of his last illness. He was a ripe scholar and was particularly well versed in the Bible. While he was a firm believer in the doctrines of the Baptist church, yet he was broad enough in his views to embrace all who professed the name of Jesus as the Savior of mankind.

While he never re-visited his native land, yet he was possessed of an ardent love for Wales and her people, in in his will he left a small bequest out of his estate to be used in the spread of the gospel in that country. He raised a large family, consisting of five sons and three daughters. His sons are G. E. James, a merchant in Caldwell; Dr. A. Judson James, who lives in Galveston county; T.O. James, Wade James and Weyland James, the last three being engaged in stock raising in the Panhandle. His oldest daughter, Gretta, married Mr. C. H. Coffield, who now resides in Bowie, Texas; the second daughter, Clolista, married E. L. Ousley and died several years ago, and the youngest daughter, Miss Bertha Maye James, who is unmarried. All of his children are noble and honorable Christian men and women and are an honor to their parents.

Although the parents left but little of this world's goods to their children, yet in the Christian lives which they lived and the good which they did in the world, they left them a heritage the value of which is more precious than gold. A FRIEND
