Some History of Barksdale, Texas
The forerunner of the town of Barksdale was called Dixie, named for Camp Dixie, a Texas Ranger post near the military road to Fort Inge to the southeast. The first settler was Jerusah Sanchez who was midwife for the Nueces Canyon area. Next came Elizabeth Hill, whose son, Jim, was a military scout, followed by Lewis Barksdale, a veteran of the Republic of Texas Wars. The J. R. Sweeten family established a store that became the focal point for the community. They applied for a post office in 1882 and because there was another town named "Dixie", they had to change the name. They chose Barksdale after Keziah Barksdale, daughter of Lewis.
