Sand Springs Missionary Baptist Church

The Sand Springs Missionary Baptist Church, located on Farm Road 1616 just north of Athens off the Tyler Highway, had its beginnings about 15 years ago. Originally known as the Sand Springs Church, the congregation disbanded when the Sand Springs school property was sold in 1950. It was not until 1961 that the church was reorganized as the Sand Springs Missionary Baptist Church. Twenty persons were charter members. The church was founded on Feb. 11, 1962 and a church building was constructed at the present location. The orginial church had held its worship services in the Flat Creek community building. The present value of the church property is estimated at $10,000. Two new additions to the church have been made since March of this year--a new pastor and a new steeple. The Rev. Jack Burgess has served the church as pastor since March 1st. The steeple was added to the church soon after he arrived. Rev. Burgess serves a congregation of about 50 persons. He and his family reside at 710 Barbara in Athens. Serving as Sunday School superintendent is Harley Kirkwood. Pianist is Mrs. Glenda Harris and song director is Lloyd Hood. Mrs. Frances Smith is president of the women's organization. Deacons of the church include Artie Kirkwood, Joe Smith and Johnny Camp.
