West Athens Baptist Church

The West Athens Baptist Church, which began with only seven charter members in 1933, has steadily increased its membership through the years and has enjoyed an unusually large rate of growth in the past two years.  The congregation which numbered about 460 in 1964, now stands at approximatley 600 members.  The first location of the church was a vacant lot on West Larkin St., where the organizational meeting was held.  The charter members decided to buy two acres of land on the corner of West Tyler and Gauntt Streets.  This became the site of the original church building.  After being damaged by fire in 1963, the building was rebuilt into a modern chuch auditorium and classroom unit with a seating capacity of more than 800.  The estimated value of the entire church plant is now $150,000, according to the Rev. Robert H. Moran, pastor of the church.  Rev. Moran resides with his family at 624 W. Larkin St. in Athens.  V.L. Lambert serves as chairman of the board of deacons.  Members of the board are A.L.(Addison) Skinner, Harold Spann, Henry Worsham, Obie Dowell, Sr., Larkin Bowman, C.C. (Clarence) Dool and G.L. Wisdom.  The Sunday School superintendent is Wayne Smallwood.  Mrs. Joyce Spam is organist and Harold Spam is music director.  Mrs. Agnes Ireland serves as president of the women's organization and Henry Worsham is president of the Brotherhood.
