R. E. Bertram

(Edited)

While running for County Judge, he wrote the following:

I am a native of the state of East Tennessee, Meigs County. My father was a Confederate soldier, and I was about twelve years old at the closes of the war in 1865, and witnessed things that tried men’s souls to be loyal to principles.

My education is limited. I went to school from one to three hears after I was 12 until I was 18 year old. Attended high school two years; studied law at night, passed my examination, obtained license to practice law in all courts of Tennessee.

Came to Texas in 1874, taught school and farmed until 1887. Sold goods and run a gin at Reily Springs until 1893. Farmed until I moved to Sulphur Springs in 1910.

I have tried to be liberal in my views, and do my own thinking. I was justice of Peace at Reily Springs two years, postmaster 7 years, road overseer and school trustee. Have represented this county in state legislature five different times. I claim to be a Democrat.
